The PLA is rushing to replace its older aircraft rather than flood the world with J-20s. As for regional aircraft numbers they're irrelevant as china willl erase those bases with missiles.  The real question is the number of drones and loyal wingmen that will be deployed.

I like that power projection was mentioned.  When compared with the US, China is a local player. They seem to project their worldwide influence via infrastructure projects. US likes to level the area with some big explosions first, then perhaps build some lasting "de ocracy"... like in Libya, Syria, Afghanistan and so many other fortunate countries.

Even if we see it as an equivalent of F-35-A, while it is capable, its use is limited. It is not really a threat to the US - unless a US carrier group comes to range and attempts bombing China. They, on the other hand, can't go to the US to do the bombing, as the Chinese fleet is inadequate for such a task.
