NEW DELHI: Over 38.3 lakh foreigners visited India during the period from 01.04.2022 to 31.10.2022, with Bangladeshi citizens accounting for the maxmum arrivals at 8.4 lakh, followed by the US citizens (over 8 lakh) and UK nationals (3.8 lakh). This marks a rise of 250% in arrivals of Bangladeshi citizens in India and 73% in that of US nationals, as compared to the calendar year 2021.

As per the just-released annual report of the home ministry for the year 2022-23, the total arrivals of foreign citizens into India were up 150% between 2022 and 2021 but still remain way short pre-Covid period traffic; for instance, the number of international visitors was 1.09 crore in the calendar year 2019 and 1.4 crore over the 15-month period from January 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019

The seven nations whose citizens, along with those from Bangladesh, US and UK - constituted 73% of the total foreign visitors here between April 1 and October 31 last year are Australia (1.8 lakh), Canada (1.4 lakh), Sri Lanka (1.1 lakh), Nepal (88,460), Germany (86,006), Malaysia (83,808) and Singapore (78,888). Only recently, India has suspended visa services for Canadian citizens amid the row over Ottawa's allegations linking India to the killing of its citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist, in June.

Long-term visas were issued to 902 Pakistanis, 112 Afghanistan citizens and eight Bangladeshi citizens belonging to their respective minorities between 01.04.2022 and 27.09.2022, states the latest annual report of MHA.
