NEW DELHI: In a multi-front attack of unprecedented magnitude, Hamas militants on Saturday fired thousands of rockets on Israeli cities and sent fighters across land and sea to catch the country off-guard on a major holiday.

周六，趁一个重大节日，哈马斯武装分子向以色列城市发射了数千枚火箭弹，并派遣战士穿越陆地和海洋，令以色列猝不及防。

The attack, being seen as one of the sharpest escalations in the bloody history between the countries, prompted Israel to "declare a war" on Palestine militants.

“We are at war ... not an operation,' not a round,' but at war," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised address as he announced a mass mobilisation of the country's army reserves.

How did the attack unfold?

The assault began shortly after day back around 6.30am without any warning on the Jewish Sabbath and the morning of a festival, the last of the series of Jewish high holidays.

Within the first hour of the attack, streams of rockets had slammed relentlessly into Israeli towns and cities, striking as far north as Rishon LeZion, about 10 miles south of Tel Aviv, and Ramla, near Israel’s international airport.
