KOCHI: The qualification sought was Class 7-pass, plus the ability to ride a bicycle. Yet, early on Friday in Kerala's Ernakulam, scores of BTech holders and graduates queued up to apply for the job of government office peon, paying around Rs 23,000 a month, reports Sreemol TC.

For many of the B.Tech holders who turned up for the cycling test, a menial job in a government office is less risky and more secure than being part of the gig economy (as so-called "executives" with one of the ride-hailing and online food delivery services) or doing a graveyard shift for around Rs 11,000 a month in big tech firms.

"If we are appointed in companies like KSEB (the state power utility), the salary will be even more - above Rs 30,000," said Kochi resident K Prasanth, who has a diploma in banking and runs a cafe. "I have been trying to get a secure job with a good income for the past few years," he added as he waited to take the test.

"The cycle was the mode of transport for office assistants. Though modes of transport have changed, the government has not changed this rule. Female and physically disabled candidates are exempted from the test. Cycling tests were mandatory for various jobs under 'last grade servants' earlier but the government ended that around 10 years ago. Now the test is mandatory for office assistants only," said a PSC official.

The problem with Indian youths is that they consider Govt.Public undertaking job is the only job and private sector jobs are not job. They forget that Govt jobs are very limited and with digitization the jobs are dwindling. Only Private sectors can provide jobs with fat salary but one has to sweat hard and prove the talent as the competition is accute. Tatas, Godrej' Relaiance Adanis Wipros and other big companies are providing millions of jobs but one need to fulfill required qualifications. I am surprised in Kerla which is ruled by leftist gang is still following the Peon System ,it is British Gora saheb exploitation. I am sure leftist Ministers must be having several govt peons serving at their home. Leftists are hypocrites and greatest exploiters of workers.

Those who just go to collage to get a certificate of passing without learning anything will never have the confidence to earn anything with that knowledge. This is the reason we see many certified but not qualified professional degree holders are ready to do any job for money. It is an insult our education system and also show lack of confidence within these professional grads

The Co unists and Congress ruled Kerala not created suitable jobs for knowledgeable deserving youths. They didn't allowed many private companies to establish and creat jobs for young generation. Kerala is the most backward state in country in terms of industrialization and creating job for young educated deserving youths.
