India aims to deploy indigenous long-range air defence system by 2028-2029

NEW DELHI: India plans to operationally deploy by 2028-2029 its own long-range air defence system, which can detect and destroy incoming stealth fighters, aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and precision-guided munitions at ranges up to 350-km.

The “interception capabilities” of the indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) system, being developed by DRDO under the ambitious Project Kusha, will be “comparable” to the formidable Russian S-400 Triumf air defence system recently inducted by the IAF, sources told TOI on Sunday.

消息人士周日告诉《印度时报》，印度国防研究与发展组织(DRDO)正在进行雄心勃勃的“库沙”项目(Project Kusha)，开发具备“拦截能力”的国产远程地对空导弹(LR-SAM)系统，将与印度空军最近引进的强大的俄罗斯S-400 “凯旋”防空系统媲美。

After the Cabinet Committee on Security in May 2022 cleared development of the LR-SAM system as a “mission-mode” project, the defence ministry last month accorded the acceptance of necessity (AoN) for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore.

在内阁安全委员会于2022年5月批准将LR-SAM系统进入“任务模式”项目后，国防部上个月同意以2170亿卢比的价格为印度空军采购5个中队。

The mobile LR-SAM, with long-range surveillance and fire control radars, will have different types of interceptor missiles designed to hit hostile targets at 150-km, 250-km and 350-km ranges.

具有远程监视和火控雷达的移动式LR-SAM将装配不同类型的拦截导弹，旨在打击150公里，250公里和350公里范围内的敌对目标。

“It will be capable of reliable `area air defence’ with single-shot kill probability of not less than 80% for single missile launch and not less than 90% for salvo launch,” a source said.

Meant to provide comprehensive air defence cover to strategic and tactical vulnerable areas, the LR-SAM will be effective even against high-speed targets with low-radar cross-section, as per the DRDO.

I happy to know that you read news, but Iron dome is only for very short term rockets. Its good when your enemy is Hamas who has no cruise missiles or fighter planes but small low tech rockets. DRDO’s Kusha is meant to counter a more powerful sophoticated enemy like China who can launch multiple lyers of long range missiles and sophisticated fighter planes.

While it is a commendable effort for defence against ICBMs and other long range missiles, it is equally important to develop detection and ranging systems for low flying radar opaque UAVs, Drones, powered gliders which will be deployed enmass from close range . For the cost of one ICBM, atleast a hundred UAVS / drones can be used by the enemy. You can shoot down a bird but can you shoot a mosquito or bee? I hope the Defence higher ups give due priority for tackling low level, low power flying objects rather than develo high cost system promoted by DRDO and PSUs to build their own empire.
