India, US back Israel on terror, diss 'China’s aggression';  in a first, no mention of Pakistan in 2+2 joint statement

India and the US looked to further consolidate their Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership with "substantive and rewarding" talks in the 5th 2+2 ministerial to boost defence and security cooperation and to deepen the trade and technology partnership. Significantly, as the ministers reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific through Quad-like mechanisms, defence minister Rajnath Singh bluntly said in his talks with his counterpart Lloyd Austin that India and the US agreed on strategic issues like "countering China’s aggression".

Counterterrorism was another focus area as the 2 sides jointly declared support for Israel against terrorist attacks but without naming Hamas. However, for the first time since its inception, the 2+2 in its joint statement didn’t specifically name Pakistan and ask it to not allow its soil to be used for terrorist activities.

Expectedly, the Israel-Hamas conflict found a prominent mention in a joint statement that noted the "horrific" terrorist attacks against Israel and had the ministers reiterating that India and the US stood with Israel against terrorism, and seeking immediate release of all remaining hostages. To balance out, they also called for adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.
