The United States vetoed a United Nations resolution Friday backed by almost all other Security Council members and many other nations demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, where Palestinian civilians are facing what the UN chief calls a “humanitarian nightmare.”

It’s time to withdraw the authorization from all countries who enjoy the power to veto. Voting should be the only factor of determining whether the resolution should be passed or denied. The hosting country should not be allowed to vote. Council members should hold the meeting only in neutral countries.
