Mumbai is way behind Manila and Bangkok in infrastructure, safety, security nad daily life. In Mumbai, we travel like cattle in over crowded buses and trains in which there often isnt even space to keep our toe standing! Hence we leave home an hour earlier just to stand for an hour in the train!

I dont think that will happen in near future.

You are talking about a city where people literally play with death in trains to reach there offices daily,No proper transport facility even in Roads,A slight downpour tra people in there offices,filling up with illegal immigrants,Delay in construction Developments due to lazy Municipal Corporations,and seggregating people on the basis of Religion,Caste,Sex etc.

Of course this is not the case with Shanghai as far as I know, so Mumbai will remain in slums and Shanghai will keep rising.

Probably when we learn time travel and then Shanghai decides to go back in the past rather than in the future. Shanghai is a fantastic city with infrastructure that no other city in the world boasts of. Mumbai is a “has been” which is bursting on its seams with infra that is getting poorer by the day. I have lived for 4 years in Mumbai and 2.5 in Shanghai and unless something truly unfortunate happens, it is Mumbai that has all the catching up to do.

No Shanghai can't.

Shanghai has one of the largest metro system in the world, the first magnetic train on this planet, the largest container port following by Singapore, uncountable amount of 100m+ buildings.

While Mumbai has the largest slum on this planet. I don't see a chance that Shanghai can catch up with Mumbai in 50 years.

I will be very honest…but the answer is it can’t.

It already has old infrastructure condensed into an area with high population density. To make any amendments or changes would mean to rebuild the whole city again.

But there are cities in India that can…Bangalore and Hyderabad.

What to say of Shanghai, even Delhi, Mumbai's great northern rival in India, has stolen a march over the city. With India’s best subway system and a competent BRTS system in place, Delhi has its own back to pat. NCR has more GDP now as compare to MMR region. Even southern rival cities marching to this. You can compare infrastructure as compare to Bengaluru.

To be fair to Mumbai, it is not as if the city is not trying. It definitely is, but its efforts are too far and few between. it need alot to be done. We need to do more and more to compete with world class cities.

Again Each city is unique in itself, as are its problems. As such, the ‘Shanghai Model’ cannot be replicated in Mumbai. The city will have to find its own unique model, its own answers to its infrastructural problems. That, most importantly, would require a concerted and coordinated effort from government, bureaucracy, developers, activists and citizens.

The city’s dynamic and resourceful nature mean that Mumbai can achieve, once it has set its heart to a task. We just have to give it some more time. We need proper governance and action.

Hasn’t it already done so, spectacularly? China’s economy is over $17 trillion, India’s is less than half that….. Mumbai is still mostly the over-populated, polluted, traffic-ridden city struggling to build highways; it has high-rises but nothing like the Manhattan like sky-line of Shanghai. I went to Shanghai in 2018 but grew up in Mumbai. I still love Mumbai, and would love to be able to return there if I could afford the real estate. My country is my country. But how can I claim Mumbai rivals Shanghai..? One is a rival of Manhattan - the other is a huge poverty and riches laden metropolis with huge problems.

What is the greatest city in Asia, Mumbai or Shanghai?

I am not sure what you mean by greatest. Many of my Indian colleagues would argue that Mumbai is not the greatest city in India. Obviously Shanghai is much better than Mumbai, however Singapore is generally considered the best big city in Asia. Well built buildings and well maintained public areas, well-organized transportation, safe, clean, good job opportunities and living conditions for almost all residents.
