JAMMU: At least four soldiers lost their lives and three others were wounded in a terrorist ambush on two military vehicles in J&K’s Poonch district on Thursday, coming just a month after security forces faced five fatalities, including two captains, during an anti-terrorism operation in the adjoining Rajouri sector.

Sources said the troopers were ambushed around 3.45pm while en route to reinforce a joint operation against terrorists in the Dhera Ki Gali area since Wednesday evening. The attack occurred at Dhatyar Morh between Dhera Ki Gali and Bufliaz, under the jurisdiction of Surankote police station, bordering Rajouri and Poonch districts.

According to a military spokesperson, a joint search operation was initiated on Wednesday based on “hard intelligence” about the presence of terrorists in the area. “The hiding terrorists fired at the search party, leading to retaliatory shooting and a gunfight,” the officer said. When additional forces were moved to the site, the terrorists attacked the vehicles — a truck and a Maruti Gypsy. This resulted in the death of four soldiers and left three others wounded.

Disturbing images and videos from the site displayed blood on the street, broken helmets, and shattered windscreens of the military vehicles. Officials expressed concern that terrorists may have taken away the arms of the targeted soldiers.

All troop movements in J&K particularly the terrorist prone regions must be in APCs (armoured vehicles) only with mine-detection, night vision and motion sensor equipment. Our forces need bullet proof vehicles to move around border regions. Its quite clear that terrorist activity cannot be stopped by legislative means such as abrogation of Art 370 etc, though BJP made tall claims on Aug 5th 2019.It takes a long time to rid the area of terror and we need to support our forces to the utmost extent.
