Amid continued efforts by the West to pin Russia down in Ukraine, external affairs minister S Jaishankar backed ties with Moscow, calling it a valued and time-tested partner with which India enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship that’s based on strategic convergence and geopolitical interests and realities.

Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday for bilateral talks that saw them discussing ways to further enhance energy ties and to augment defence cooperation through joint production of military equipment. They also focused on the situation in Gaza and Ukraine while discussing regional and global issues. Significantly, Jaishankar got an audience with President Vladimir Putin later in the day.

In what was their 7th meeting this year, Lavrov reiterated Russia’s support to India’s candidature for permanent membership of the Security Council, while lauding India’s G20 presidency for not allowing the joint communique to be biased or one-sided. Lavrov underscored the importance of energy ties, which has seen India emerging as one of the largest importers of Russian fuels, saying it’s a strategic area for India-Russia relations and that he and Jaishankar agreed on the expansion of exports of hydrocarbons to the Indian market as well as cooperation for peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

India and China remain the only two major powers to have never explicitly condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. Jaishankar said after his meeting with Lavrov that PM Modi will have his annual summit with Putin next year. The summit couldn’t take place in 2022 and 2023, as Putin remained focused on the war in Ukraine and India was engaged in hosting the G20 summit.

印度和中国仍然是仅有的两个从未明确谴责俄罗斯出兵乌克兰的大国。苏杰生在与拉夫罗夫会晤后表示，莫迪总理明年将与普京举行年度峰会。2022年和2023年，由于普京总统的注意力集中在乌克兰战争上，而印度则忙于主办G20峰会，因此无法举行峰会。

I'm guessing Russia will give Indians jobs too? While Indias exports to Russia have increased slightly, the imports of Russian crude is bulk of the trading between India and Russia. Also the Russians are trading mostly in YUAN which is being done through Dubai and Singapore. This makes the YUAN stronger. On the other hand India has much stronger trading with USA. India exports around $75 Billion in goods to the US and imports around $50 Billion in goods from the US.

It is doubtful that American advisors will ever allow their country to move really closer to India as they seem happy to be get betrayed by Pakistan any number of times. Russia has also moved downwards in the quality of de ocracy.,If the quality of their civil de ocracy improves, it will strengthen relationships with their European neighbours. EU-Russia-India trilateral has become bit corrosive. If quality of de ocracy within Russia improves, it is likely to unlock far greater prosperity for Russia. If India has to be independent of US, Russia and China then it needs to pursue its own path and before that it needs to reform drastically on all the fronts and not by cherry picking, the reforms, if any. India always maintained good relationship with Russia so this is nothing new. But great to see how Modi-ji is maintaining a fine balance between both the opposing sides. We are the most populous country with tens of millions of people coming out of poverty. Unemployment needs to be addressed urgently. Road to $5T economy and beyond. All these trade agreements help.

It is unfortunate that their economies are in disarray. Historical evidence shows that both India and Russia are close in various sectors despite having distinct chemistry.
