I stayed in both countries. I know enough Vietnam to say is a real beautiful country. I stayed less in Thailand , but I can say is a beautiful country too.. who win? To me win Vietnam, but is not a race and both countries are gorgeous. Let’s me say this. Transportation in Thailand are better, if you search info in internet, especially a foreigner, about service you’ll get easily to find in Thailand (people talk more English in general, and a lot of websites are also English selection, in Vietnam maybe use only Vietnamese.. anyway young people in Vietnam know English pretty well, even if they look more shy to use, so I guess will be change in the next future ).. Hospital in Thailand are very good, especially the foreigners oriented.. in Vietnam looks old structure, but the doc have heavy study on their shoulders and the treatment are first class also there.. in general Thailands has more post card place, compare to Vietnam that has little less..

Seems better Thailand so, but at my eyes Thailand looks tourist oriented, Vietnam looks original. I not talk about the building, both countries have, and I don’t like much.. touristic place with big hotel that deface the environment and the original soul.. But tahiland has more contact with foreigners.

just to conclude.. both countries have the good and worse.. is not a race and both countries can give great satisfaction to visit or to live.. if you are a foreigner, especially if you live in a defined ‘first class state’, don’t look at this countries with superior eyes, you will be surprised about how much everyone can discover and learn from those two marvellous nations..

i think Thailand good marketing in the past. But now, everything changing. Vietnam has had a more open policy with upgrading relations with the US, entertainment services have also been loosened and much more comfortable than before, the cost of vacation travel in Vietnam is 5 times cheaper than in Thailand. Don't take this too seriously as I think the person who raised this question is just poor in English. Maybe he meant Vietnam is less developed than Thailand and for tourism it is not as popular as there are less advertising to foreigners. I believe as soon as Vietnam completes its subway and rail network, it will bloom. As transport becomes easier, it will sure attract many tourists from abroad. I do wish Vietnam will finish its infrastructure soon and then I will visit more often. Best wishes.

It's actually illegal to stay in someone's house without notifying local police in Thailand. There is a form your are supposed to fill out with a copy of your passport Most places don't care and ignore the law but all they need is a neighbor complaining and the home owner will be fined. Police bust homeowners for it now and then to make examples, local places will start doing the paperwork then a few months later they will ignore it again till the next police bust.

Thailand actually has a ton of laws and isn't some libertarian dream like many westerns think. It's just a matter of cops being lazy and only enforcing when higher ups give them trouble.

Vietnam is worse than Thailand because they imprison corrupt government officials when they are caught. Thailand, on the other hand, refuses to even investigate reports to police of officials extorting people. I know this through personal experience. So, if you really want to hate on the government, Vietnam is definitely worse than Thailand.

From my very brief visit to both Thailand and Vietnam, my personal and subjective experience is that Vietnam is more restrictive (you can’t stay with locals in their houses without getting permission from local police), the traffic is difficult to negotiate and the food is not easy to get used to.

Thailand has more developed tourist attractions, particularly beautiful beaches and island resorts but some of it is too touristy that it feels uncomfortable. The road infrastructure in Thailand is more modern and well developed in the urban areas and they have some of the most beautiful university campuses in Asia.

Vietnamese food is full of herbs which is very healthy as you can see the people are generally slim and ‘fit’ but not easy on the palate and there is a heavy dependence on fish sauce. Thailand offers a better selection of cuisine with coconut float, pineapple fried rice and tomyam among my favorites. The pizza, fried chicken and crab dishes are also popular selections.

Vietnamese attractions are more traditional like the cultural village, tea house, and the unspoilt natural caves and hill resorts. Vietnam has developed quickly economically in recent years and the cost of living and travel has gone up significantly.

What is more attractive about Thailand is the ‘freedoms’ you have to travel and live in the country but with freedom comes ‘risks’ too, so just beware and take precautions. Too much freedom has resulted in the younger generation in Thailand suffering from societal ills and decadent living while the more rigid Vietnamese education system bodes well for the next generation in terms of economic and human development.

Both Thailand and Vietnam has beautiful traditional costumes and some unique experiences such as the river market and spectacular architectural buildings. Thailand also has some very beautiful public parks.
