France reported its lowest birth rate since the second world war in 2023. Meanwhile, China's population shrank for the second consecutive year. While both countries are facing the same challenge, the reasons and solutions are different.

When my wife and I married in 1968, she was teaching as an adjunct at Boston University and Tufts.  When we married she gave up both jobs and then for the next 16 years she was at home.  In 1984 she went back to teaching but both children were already going to school.   But various factors have now made it difficult or impossible for just one salary to support a family.  Is feminism a cause?  In part yes, but there are surely other factors.

China's decline is actually a good thing! There's a point where more people are counterproductive.

During the 80s and 90s, demographers around the world predicted a future of scarcity, hunger and socio-economic upheavals due to overpopulation. That perception is no longer valid in today's situation, where most countries are facing declining birthrates and ageing population. NOT in India's case  with a growing population without jobs, education, healthcare, social security, India could very well prove those predictions correct in the foreseeable future

As far as Europe is concerned, aging population is a general problem, not just for France. Most shop attendants, be it a Mall or single shop are middle aged men and women. Rarely do you see a youthful person. People who are sell into their sixties must continue to work on account of cost of living.

On the contrary, in India shop attendants, or delivery boys, cabbies etc are youngsters.
