Why are there so many Chinese tourists everywhere and they travel in huge groups?

There are a few reasons why Chinese tourists travel in large groups.
Firstly, it is often more cost-effective for them to do so as they can take advantage of group discounts and other offers.
Secondly, travelling with family or friends provides a sense of security and comfort that many people find reassuring when visiting unfamiliar places.
Finally, the sheer size of China's population means there are simply more Chinese tourists than ever before!

There are lots of Chinese
Many of them are inexperienced world travellers
They may not have very good english
So they choose to join tours
Some of these tours provide very good pricing compared with independent travel
In China, many people who have travelled independently before choose to travel by tour. So there is that.
David Brin (the author of The Postman) predicted this in another book he wrote, set in the near future where Chinese would be travelling in group tours like Japanese did in the past.

A slightly different view but it is an interesting take:
Chinese have become more affluent going from $1,000 to $10,000 in per capita GDP.
Tourists are used as money laundering tool. For example, the hotel they stay are ultimately owned by Chinese person on many cases. Restaurants they visit are Chinese owned, local operators are Chinese owned. They provide cheap even subsidies services to launder money out from mainland China as there is a strict remittances restriction (SAFE, State Administration For Foreign Exchange). Say if each tourist pays $1000, excluding flights, local spend is $600. It would be the same as each tourists are being used to carry $300 (assuming margin of 50%) to your destination, and the money is clean and official. Added benefit would be, the beneficiary is also proved business investor who would qualify for residency and ultimate immigration into the destination.

Time constraint and language barrier mean that these tourists want a scripted tour and don’t want to deal with the challenge of exploring countries on their own. The guided tours will hit all the important places and let’s be honest, that’s really the extent of interest that the average near-retired Chinese tourist will have of the country to begin with.
Also, they want a travel agency to deal with the responsibilities of incidents, delays and general inconveniences.
When younger people of the newer generation can afford to travel, you will see an increased interest in the actual lifestyle of the countries visited, and a desire to explore on their own. We all know we can read about famous monuments online, no need to waste hours of traffic congestion just for that photo op and a regurgitated description from the tour guide.

The Chinese economy has been booming for the last twenty years whilst most other economies have stagnated at best. And travel restrictions have been dropped.
Add that to a tradition of gift giving, particularly of luxury western goods which are heavily taxed in China.
The Chinese tend to travel in groups even within China and they mostly buy fully inclusive packages when travelling abroad. They need guides when travelling being short of language skills.

Because 1 in every 6 people on the planet is a Chinese, now that the economic obstacle is out of the way, Chinese tourists should be plenty.
Older people or tourists unable to speak the local language travel in groups no matter which country they come from. It’s easier and cheaper to travel this way. Smaller Chinese groups and individual travelers are also plenty, but they blend in better and attract much less attention at major sites.

As explained, for the most part, they don’t speak English or any other foreign language. Many that age may even have trouble speaking Mandarin fluently. There’s safety in numbers. They are with their own people in a foreign land so they feel more comfortable.
Having lived in China, I can tell you that they certainly have no malicious intent. They are traveling for the first time and they come from a more relaxed culture where they don’t get upset over minor things as westerners do. They’re often perplexed when confronted by locals for minor infractions which are commonplace and nonchalantly dismissed in China.
Nonetheless, they are aware that things work differently elsewhere and they are improving year after year. The young ones are very confident and carry themselves well.
Give them time and they will be model tourists.

Chinese people tend to feel more confident when traveling in groups.
And it’s not because they believe that other countries are dangerous or something, but because they lack self confidence. Most Chinese especially middle aged and older people have zero grasp of English or any other language beyond their own, many older people do not even speak Mandarin but some local dialect.
Many Chinese believe that they lack the skills and ability to travel abroad on their own, they are afraid of not being able to communicate with people in other countries and getting lost or something.
They could hire a private guide of course but those are expensive when hired privately so they rather join a tour group simply because it's cheaper. In a tour group the safety of familiar ‘Chinese' faces who speak the same language and of a guide who knows how to get around means that Chinese people do not have to worry about anything but following the group.
But it’s mostly older people, young people such as myself are more confident about traveling alone or with a handful of friends thanks to our higher education and better English.
Eventually there will be a decrease of tour groups popularity as older people make way (nice way or putting it) to newer generations who are more interested with a genuine experience in other countries and meeting the local people, trying local food, experiencing local culture, etc…

Yes, it is true.
During my study in Germany, it is always the case that Chinese tourist traveled in a group, which may be explained by the following reasons.
First, they can not speak foreign language. most of them are adult, in their generation, they have little chance to learn well a foreign language. as a result, it is better for them to travel with a group leaded by a guider.
Second, since the economy reform in 80s, people in China saw a relevantly high speed of economy development. they accumulate certain wealthy, which make it possible to travel abroad.
Third, they want to buy lots of luxury goods from abroad at a lower price. it is more convenience to buy these things with the help of the membership of the group or the guider.

Let me guess: You are not interested in making a sales to these tourists. As such, they are nuisance to you and you want to demonize them.
Please go to any travel shows, and there are many tour operators serving USA customers. They all speak English and the buses are just as big.

Yep, this has become a widespread phenomenon in China.
Lets profile those in huge tourist groups first.
Most of tourist groups are composed of mid-aged or even older females and their male counterparts, mostly husbands. These females are called as 大妈.
Higher than 90% of group members lack basic English skills, so they need to rely on tourist groups equipped with guides who are capable of interpreting for them.
Tourist agencies offer affordable tours since a large number of them are not well off. They prefer Southeast Asia cuz commodity price there is low and so is flight price since it is in proxmity to China.
They tend to talk loudly and make noise in public cuz most of them do not have public awareness. A root cause is that they did not receive proper education when they should have. ‘Cultural Revolution’ killed their chance of being educated.
So, it gives you impression that they are everywhere. Sometimes they even cause fight with locals or airline staff. Jum in line, littering and vandalism are common for them.
Surely they are not evil people. Some of them may become victims. I mean some cheesy tourist agencies draw them in by offering extremely low price and bring in mandatory shop during the tour.
Of course some of them are of incomparable purchasing power. They are able to empty a whole duty-free shop.
