The U.S. is in a difficult spot over how to retaliate to the attack on its forces in Jordan. And to add to its worries, China has now issued a warning against a retaliatory strike. Cautioning the U.S., Beiing said that Washington's action could push it into a vicious cycle. China also mentioned that Iran has clearly stated that it had nothing to do with the attack and that any U.S. action against Tehran could be dangerous. China's warning comes amid reports of a U.S. mulling covert operation against Iran after three American troops were killed in Jordan on January 28.

According the Jordanians, this attack on the US base was not on a base located in Jordan, but on the other side of the border in Syria.
The US most certainly wouldn't admit this because they are illegally in Syria.
They were not invited by the Syrian government and don't have a UN mandate for their presence.

This grants Syria and it's supporters the right (according to international law), to legitimately attack these bases , making a US retaliation a criminal offense.
Furthermore, one of these bases is used for the training of what the US calls "moderate militia" (actually a euphemism for terrorists), which the US would like to keep out of the news at all cost.
