I would say they are pretty good if you are comparing the airports with those in New Delhi Terminal 3, Mumbai Terminal 2, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bangalore. These are the six major airports which serve most of the international flights going in and out of India and have more-or-less world-standard facilities. The airports are neat and clean, not too small to feel suffocated and not too large that going from one end to the other makes you miss your flight. All the necessary information related to your flight is displayed on the giant screens at regular intervals. The CISF staff at the security screening may come off as a bit rude but they are nothing in front of the TSA in the US.

In my opinion, airport standards are pretty much the same throughout the world in all major cities. Like India, some countries have an added layer of security right at the entrance where visitors without a valid ticket aren't allowed to enter the terminal building. Most other countries do not have such a restriction. However, knowing the public in India who might enter the airport just for leisure, a security check at the gate is necessary.

There is some scope for improvement in the airport lounges, however. The common lounges get too crowded with people availing complimentary access, thanks to their credit cards. So the airlines need to come up with dedicated lounges like Air India has one in Delhi Terminal 3 airport for their business class passengers.

Getting public transport after coming out of the airport is also quite good. In Colombo, the system was the worst. Hyderabad and Bangalore airports are a lot better compared to that where you just need to walk to the Ola/Uber parking spot and the cab in front takes you to your destination.

Some of the airports in India are far better than the airports outside India. For example, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport gets too crowded during midnight and that's when most of the international flights are scheduled. They are gradually shifting their domestic flights to another airport; but till that's not done, it becomes a reality difficult experience for passengers catching re-eye international flights. Immigration itself took half an hour because of the long queue. Also, there is a lack of proper guiding paths like where to go for the security checks, the immigration area or the boarding gates… nothing was mentioned properly on the signboards and one has to rely on asking the airport staff to go to places.

Delhi airport has armed guards outside it who will not let you enter the airport building to check in at the airline desk as you can do at most international airports.
You need to have a print out of your ticket to get into the terminal, or persuade someone who can get in to get a printout from the airline desk. This was a shock.

DBX - Dubai is the most charming, and belongs to a class above.
Mumbai T2 is second only to Dubai, and only Kualalumpur and Zurich come close.
So today, Mumbai Airport is among the best.
But it is just Mumbai T2.
Talking about an average considering all airports we have, it must not be that bad either. Look at new Airports in Bangaluru, Hydrabad, Bhubaneswar to name a few, they all have improved a lot.

Been to about 4 international airports and many domestic airports.
The Frankfurt airport, I feel is the BIGGEST in terms of airport space - not terminal space. The taxing took us forever and I was completely amazed at the size of the airport. And the shop area and the others is very lively and interesting!

I've been to quite a number of airports. So; I can safely say that Indian airports have improved quite substantially over the past decade. They used to be pathetic; like a State Bus Terminal; but has become plush and with some degree of ambience.
