NEW DELHI: A passenger, Dr. Shubhendu Keshari was shocked to find a dead cockroach in the food served by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) on Vande Bharat Express on Thursday.

新德里：周四，一名乘客舒本杜·凯萨里博士在“致敬印度”号特快列车上的提供的食物中发现一只死蟑螂，震惊不已。据报道，列车上的餐食由印度铁路餐饮和旅游公司(IRCTC)供应。

Keshari was traveling from Kamlapati to Jabalpur Junction. In a post on X, the passenger shared photos of a non-vegetarian Thali he received onboard the semi-high-speed train, revealing a dead cockroach inside.

凯萨里当时正从卡姆拉帕蒂前往贾巴尔普尔枢纽。在推特上的一篇帖子中，这名乘客分享了他在这列半高速列车上收到的非素食塔利套餐的照片，里面有一只死蟑螂。

The images prompted varied reactions from social media users.

Dr. Keshari also shared photos of a filed complaint at Jabalpur station about the unhygienic food conditions on the train.

凯萨里博士还分享了在贾巴尔普尔站投诉该列车不卫生食品的照片。

Keshari wrote, "I was traveling on 1/02/2024 on train no. 20173 RKMP to JBP (Vande Bharat Exp), and I was traumatized by seeing a dead COCKROACH in the food packet given by them."

In response to the viral post, IRCTC issued an apology, announcing a heavy fine imposed on the service provider.

IRCTC在回应这篇病毒式传播的帖子时发表了道歉声明，并宣布对该服务提供商处以高额罚款。

"Sir, we sincerely apologise for the experience you had. The matter is viewed seriously, and a hefty penalty has been imposed on the concerned service provider. Moreover, monitoring has been strengthened at the source," Irctc wrote.

IRCTC写到：“先生，我们真诚地为您的经历道歉。这件事我们将严肃处理，有关的服务提供者已被处以重罚。此外，我们已从源头上加强了监测。”

In a separate response the Railway Seva said, "Your complaint has been registered on RailMadad, and a complaint number has been sent through SMS to your mobile number."

Netizens swarmed the comment section and expressed disappointment.

Our GDP may gallop fast. But, our Hygiene is not improving. Look at the kitchens in small/medium restaurants, road side eateries etc, which are still in horrible condition. I still remember of a couple of flies found in a McDonald in Mumbai and its licence was cancelled. Vande Bharat trains are only used by corrupt government officials and politicians that is why a cockroach becomes a news.

Based on my past experience, I can understand that such instances are commonplace in the railways. only that most people do not report because they know that Railways are not efficient to handle the burden of huge passengers. No remedial measures can work. I am sure the guilty in this particular case will not be found out and punished.

This apology and the fine imposed on contrator is not enough. The complainent need to be adequately compensated to avoid recurrence of such mishaps in future. The service provider now must be mde to face the music of law towards his obligations. He cannot be let off easily for this laxty.

Cockroach is a menace in all compartments in the train whether its SL or AC. A dead cockroach in food thus is not a surprise. Hygiene is a main issue in train journey which required high priority.
