If you have been to Japan, South Korea, and then to China, you will understand why China is Asia. The mother of culture is not only vast in area, but also very open-minded. Small countries like Japan and South Korea are the most overrated tourist destinations. Not only are they xenophobic but extremely narrow-minded.

In 2018, I visited Seoul with my young children. Twice in Seoul, stranger came up to me to express my kids were not welcomed. The first time was when I was in the metro station buying a ticket. The booth operator told me, “Tell your kids to shut up.” Then, it was at a cafe where a stranger said my kids couldn’t sit at the tables where we were. In contrast, when we arrived at Shanghai international airport, the Chinese would cheerfully engage with my children. I observed in Seoul how the Koreans have very specific views and very low tolerance. I will never visit Korea again. I would rather spend my travel dollars elsewhere. I have traveled with my kids to China, Europe, South America, and SE Asia, and never had such a bad experience.

Sorry your family has to deal with that type of situation. SK people are quite different. I am Chinese and visited SK 8 years ago with my son. Of course they couldn’t tell the difference at the begng but once we started talking in English, their attitude changed in a sudden and treated us with overwhelming kindness.

China is a multi-ethnic country. They have Han (majority), but they also 55 other ethnic minority groups. The government is encouraging diversity. Not a lot of people know there are 2.89M Koreans living in China. There's a Yanbian Autonomous prefecture which in Jilin province of China. It's inhabited mainly by Chaoxn (Joseon or Korean) ethnic group. They were there from the time of the Qing Dynasty.
