Is the international image of Indians improving or getting worse?

No, it's getting worse. During my brief period working at Wipro in the U.S., I stayed in Dallas for two months and observed the lifestyles of both U.S. and Indian individuals. Unfortunately, most of the time I felt regressive when encountering fellow Indians in a foreign land. As an Indian myself, it's not about tarnishing our country's reputation, but rather the harsh reality that I have witnessed: Indians can be racist towards other Indians abroad.
One of the concerning aspects I noticed is the deep-rooted caste system. Indians living in the U.S. take great pride in their castes and often form separate communities based on them. I understand that some individuals left India due to the lack of opportunities created by the reservation system. However, in this modern era, is it really necessary to continue practicing the caste system, especially in a developed country like the U.S.? I have encountered situations where people still segregate themselves based on caste while dining, leaving me to request to join a different group during lunch because I do not belong to their caste.
Another issue I faced is the preconceived notions about Indian customers when it comes to tip. While dining with foreigners in a local restaurant, a waiter gave us a strange look upon realizing we were Indians. One of the employees then explained that Indian customers often leave low or no tips. In India, tip is considered optional, but in the U.S., it is customary to tip 15-20% of the bill.
Language racism is another problem I encountered. There was a person from Tamil Nadu who did not know Hindi, although his presentation was in English. During an outing outside the office, some North Indian individuals insulted and mocked him for not knowing Hindi. Just because Hindi is widely spoken in India does not mean that everyone should be expected to learn it.
Lastly, the difference in office management between the U.S. and India is quite significant. The management in our country treats employees poorly and lacks concern for their well-being. This was highlighted during a meeting with our branch managing director (MD) in the evening. It was already 5 pm, the usual checkout time for locals, and everyone was preparing to leave. However, our Indian MD was engrossed in a topic and shouted at the employees. Thankfully, the American branch head took control and asked our Indian MD to apologize to his employees.
These incidents in the U.S. have made me feel ashamed as an Indian. I apologize if anyone feels offended by my points, as I am only recounting my personal experiences and not intending to insult anyone.

It was improving … until the Modi government started the genocide of the Muslims… nowadays almost everywhere in the Muslim world the Hindus are considered terrorists..Even in Western countries and many Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, and Japan, Hindu tourists are screened for extremism in the background and watched…
So the image of Indians are getting worse , the Modi government has put a target on their backs…Before this genocide, Muslims, Hindus and Christians lived side by side in India for centuries.

Most of the answers below are based on Individual experiences in the foreign country which is linked to personal attitude.
I have worked 6yrs in the UK, few years in some EU nations and 8yrs in Australasia continent and I wanted to share my observations regarding the improving image of Indians in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Over the past few years, I have noticed a positive shift in how the local communities perceive Indians in these countries.
In New Zealand, there seems to be an increased appreciation for the cultural diversity that Indian communities bring. The vibrant traditions, delicious cuisine, and contributions to various fields have been warmly welcomed, fostering a more inclusive environment. It's heartening to see a growing recognition of the rich tapestry of Indian culture and a diminishing of stereotypes.
Similarly, in the UK, there appears to be a positive evolution in the perception of Indians. The accomplishments of individuals of Indian origin in various fields, from academia to business and the arts, have played a significant role in sha a more positive image. Additionally, cultural events and celebrations have helped bridge gaps and build understanding between communities.
These positive changes contribute not only to the integration of Indians into the broader society but also to the strengthening of multiculturalism in these countries.
I believe these developments are essential for fostering harmony and understanding among different communities, and I am hopeful that this positive trajectory will continue in the future.

Previous foreigners viewed all Asian(mainly Chinese and Indian) as genius they couldn't understand how so many chinese and Indian could be so smart, that they win and reach finals of games like spelling bee, chess and games across other category which require brain power.
They saw us as develo, as a competition and also as a threat that's why they didn't want us to have nuclear power.
Previously we were called Indians
but now the term Hindus is more in use
Previously they saw us as a scientist, engineer, chef, truck driver electrician etc
But now we are seen as backward thinking with supremacist ego, fascist etc
If you talk about view of indian government in international media its much worse,
India has been criticised for various reason,
From freedom of speech, to injustice, to rise in rape and economic frauds, to the things that can't be said here the list is long.
And this is so bad the normal news reporters have questioned and it's administration brutally
Where as people who reporters with satire like john oliver, Trevor noah also show that image of Indian government is bad.
We don't need to see international news to understand their view of us,
What organizations like , human right watch etc says about India will give you good understand.
Recently in a us state a bill was passed against caste discrimination, such things are happening, what made them do this, it's the hate that's been spread in India by government that knows nothing but to divide and rule.

There are three visible indicators for one's impression of any specific nationality;
1.The number of people who overstay the legal period.
2.Their social conduct while staying in a foreign country.
3. Their adherence to local rules.
Out of this, the only box that Indians do not tick is is the first one, because of lack of employment opportunity in their native country. When it comes to the second category, the days of PETER SELLER'S PARTY and the gauche’ Indian is a thing of the past and the third category was hardly ever an issue with them.
However, as India has emerged as a growing economic power, there is a perception that Indians gave become more cocky (and even upstart) of late. That has been an issue which may take a while to change, as both sides get used to the change.

It depends on how news about India is reported in different countries. The emphasis is on bad news stories. ‘Dog bites man. No news. Man bites dog - it’s news!’
However, India is learning & addressing this issue with its own news channels like WION. It regularly reports on India’s remarkable achievements. This channel better reflects people’s experience of Indians & India.
There has been a lot of negative news coverage of Modi’s perceived Hindu extremism. A European channel went to investigate Hindu extremism but found only a few men with sticks near the highway, investigating if any cows had been mistreated!
One of these so-called ‘Hindu extremists’ said Modi had been in power for 9 years but he had not seen any sign of a Hindu state!

Why is that important? What an American or Brit thinks about Indians is not going to change a lot. The median thinking has always been India being a poor nation with some IT nerds. The thing that should first improve is how an Indian perceives another Indian. That unfortunately is still colored by caste creed and regionalism.

I would personally think it is getting better, but it is still an overall negative image because of apparent manifestations of poverty and backwardness.
