Saudi Arabia has been a long standing ally of Pakistan. It has extended a lot of financial support to this now beleaguered nation, which is embroiled in a catastrophic economic crisis.
Saudi Arabia will have to prove its commitment and allegiance to India, by backing India in the global arena, on its stand against Pakistan perpetuated terrorism in Kashmir. It seems unlikely that Saudi Arabia would do that and possibly it's like asking for too much and too early.
While Saudi Arabia and India have been trade partners for long, the joint military exercise could be the first step in the direction of defense ties between the two countries.

The exercises were held in Thar desert because the environment is similar to Saudi Arabia. It has nothing to do with Pakistan proxmity
