China's movie market has a robust start in 2024 with a strong Spring Festival performance. The box office returns of the eight-day Lunar New Year holiday exceeded 8 billion yuan, or about $1.13 billion. Domestic titles lead the chart, most of which are comedies. In fact, in 2023, no Hollywood movie has squeezed into the top 10 earners in China, which only happened once during the COVID-19 pandemic back in 2020. In this episode of "In Focus," we try to find out why Hollywood movies, once so popular in China, seem to have fallen out of favor in the world's biggest movie market.

Hollywood has forgotten what ‘entertainment’ means. As a European, I can’t remember the last time I sat on the edge of my seat, or felt deep emotion while watching a Hollywood movie; they seem like they are made by robots for robots. I’m a human being and I like to watch drama that speaks to me on a human level. Chinese dramas and movies do exactly that for me. They often have deeply complex and interwoven plots, very well written and highly detailed characterisation. Things like honour, redemption, and the hero’s journey no longer exst in Hollywood movies, and even the better ones like Oppenheimer seem over constructed and over embellished in style without conveying any real or relatable substance.

好莱坞已经忘了“娱乐”的含义。作为一个欧洲人，我已经不记得上一次看好莱坞电影是什么时候，我写作在座位上，感慨万千。

I think there are multiple reasons for this decline.

1) The Chinese no longer believe in Hollywood anymore.  Most of their films portray the Americans as the good guys and everyone else as the bad guys.... but reality is quite different.

2) The Chinese are getting better and better at making films themselves.

3) The scripts and storyline with Chinese movies are more in tune with the Chinese audience.

4) It's much better to watch a movie in a language you understand.

I'm a movie buff, so I watch most movies, but I know there's a huge decline in people actually going to the cinema to watch movies in the west.

i'm an American in the living in the US.  Most are propaganda movies portraying American military as a the hero.  Rescuing the world from Russians or Chinese.   It never shows the US military illegally occupying, murdering, and looting.   Plus, the hero is a blond hair, blue eye guy.   They also show other races- asians, blacks, hispanics as nerds and gangs.    The older i become...i realize the movies, music, and news is controlled by the US govt regime.   They export the biased entertainment and religion all over the globe to dominate.

Hollywood films have been largely styleless, repetitive junk for years.  Asian movies are often difficult for a westener like me, but they are finding their own original style and that makes many of them interesting and thought provoking.  I still think "The Road Home" is one of the best films to come out of Asia in years.

Chinese patronized Hollywood movies were more or less out of curiosity, goodwill and the ongoing globalization efforts, which supposedly bring people together. But the u s regime’s aggressions brought down that era, it  is gone for a good reason.

There was a time when Hollywood (LOTR, Indiana Jones, Dark Knight) and Asian Cinema (A Better Tomorrow, Once Upon a Time in China, Police Story) innovated.  Nowadays, not so much.

It has to do with the fact that people want to see movies that they can relate to culturally. People want to see their culture on the big screen.

Because of globalization, Chinese learn more and more about the US. In contrast to  40 years ago when China adopted the reform and open policy and just started to learn about the US, America and its culture (of course including Hollywood) are "disenchanted." This is good for film industry, if American movie industry is not good enough, let it go extinction, and newer and better movie industry will replace it.

I hate holywood horror cliche  endings where theres no resolution so it gives you no closure. 80s Hollywood horrors and modern Asian horrors has proved that you can have closure in a horror movie and still have a good sequel.

Simply because the American movie has reached its peak.!

Sensibly the audience need first to love and adore the American culture before they may see and love the American movie in order the audience to really be able to relate the reality versus the movie as otherwise the adult audience would feel like watching a cartoon movie which has not much sense.
