Why is there a lot of Chinese people in the Philippines?  I'm curious about how local Filipinos feel about it.  Based on what I know, Chinese people look down on Filipinos and still living here in the Philippines.

I want to talk about the phrase "look down". In China, it means something pretty different from elsewhere.

First, since the Philippines is siding with the US right now, and China and the US are really butting heads, possibly even close to a military showdown, the Chinese naturally aren't fans of the US or its buddies. This is kind of what "looking down" is about.

China's 'look down' attitude is more about opposing colonialism, suggesting 'Why don't you strive on your own, even though it's hard, it's more dignified.' So, to the Chinese, the Philippines, being all in with the US, comes off like a lackey to a colonial power, and yeah, that's seen as "looking down" too.

For the same reason, many Chinese really dig Duterte. If you have seen how Duterte speaks about China in front of Filipinos, you would understand that he is not pro-China. The Chinese understand this but see him as anti-colonial and respect Duterte as pretty down-to-earth when it comes to dealing with China.

Going back to the issue. In China, if you "look down" on someone because they're not as strong economically or militarily, that's seen as super not cool and kind of ignorant. But this kind of logic of “look down” is pretty common in countries that have embraced colonialism.                            China's "look down" has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not to do business or interact with the Philippines. It's definitely not about disrespecting Filipino people, but more about a disagreement with certain actions or attitudes at a certain period.

There’s a difference between a fresh off the boat Chinese immigrant and a fully assimilated person of Chinese descent. The 2nd generation is usually fully assimilated. These are folks that think and act like a normal Filipino. They even consider them as Filipino despite not having any Filipino blood.

Of course, I’ve seen what you’re talking about since I’ve seen it in Divisoria with those Chinese folks that own businesses and are really unruly to their workers. As I said above, their children will be fully assimilated. This is the same for 2nd generation Indian immigrants in the Philippines. Chinese immigrants have it easier blending in since they won’t stick out like a sore thumb in a crowd in the Philippines, unlike Indians.

You have to differentiate between the ethnic Chinese who are born and have lived in Philippines for a long time, and the newly arrived Chinese from Mainland China. The Chinese had been going Philippines before Philippines became an independent republic, even before the SPanish colonial time.

All these changed when President Marcos established Diplomatic relations with China in 1974 and China insisted that the Philippines grant citizenship to Chinese in the Philippines. Today, Chinese Filipinos consider themselves as Filipinos. Many of the younger generation could barely speak their parents dialects. They are more comfortable speaking Filipino or English. They have embraced the Philippine cultural without totally abandoning their parents culture.

In other words, the Indians could have said, why did you Europeans, Africans and Asians, stay in our America?

I would suggest the questioner to get a genetic analysis done, after all 30% is a high percentage, maybe the questioner's ancestors were Chinese.

According to a Pew Research survey, Chinese people have a lesser view of many countries in the world than the citizens of that country have of China:

A few noticeable examples:

India and China have roughly the same view of each other. 30% of Chinese have a favourable view of India. 31% of Indians have a favourable view of China

8% of China has a favourable view of Japan. 7% of Japan has a favourable view of China.

Pakistan would be much like the Philippines in terms of views of each other. Only 30% of Chinese are favourable toward Pakistan. Yet 78% of Pakistanis are favourable to China.

The opposite is true of the US. 35% of Americans are favourable toward China. But 50% of Chinese are favourable toward US.
