Goods train runs driverless for 80km

JAMMU/CHANDIGARH: In a near-replay of Hollywood thriller Unstoppable, a goods train with 53 wagons barrelled down Sunday without a driver at a speed of 90kmph for around 80km from Jammu’s Kathua to Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, initially rolling down a slope after the drivers allegedly halted for a tea break while leaving the engine running.

But unlike the 2010 film’s stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pine who raced against the clock to prevent a catastrophe, a steep incline in the tracks in Punjab eventually stopped the train loaded with stone chips and averted disaster.

Six rail officials, including the two drivers, were suspended later in the day. But by then, videos of the train’s eerie odyssey over an hour-and-a-half had gone viral. Some accounts suggested the guard’s cabin was found missing.

“The diesel locomotive-hauled train rolled downhill towards Pathankot after its drivers paused for a tea break at Kathua station, inadvertently leaving the engine running. Efforts to stop the train proved futile initially. It covered around 80km and was stopped by a steep gradient in Unchi Bassi (Punjab),” an official source said. An official hopped on the loco when it slowed down at Uchhi Bassi and pulled the emergency brakes.

Ferozepur division al railway manager (DRM) Sanjay Sahu said the railways had been quick to alert all stations on the Jammu-Jalandhar section, stop all down trains, and shut all crossings to let the driverless train pass. Power in overhead cables was also switched off, while all stations kept service tracks open for the runaway train.

Thank God nothing happened and the government is lucky. Probably this is the casual attitude of drivers and they should be posted at a lower level not connected to technical job. The reasons may come out after the enquiry.

It is sad and good that concerned drivers and other related employees / officers are suspended. But there was no major accident involving loss of life and property, all thanks to planning and managing it after it happened. Kudos to railway staff for this.
