 As China emerges as a leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer and exporter, the White House has raised alarms about "national security risks," likening Chinese EVs to "smartphones on wheels." With a 25% tariff in place and new subsidies excluding Chinese batteries, are the U.S.'s concerns genuine security worries, or are we seeing heightened trade protectionism?

I'm a Westerner and I can 100% attest that Western countries / companies are simply running scared because Chinese EVs are simply better than ours. They just don't like the competition because it's just too difficult for them. Perfect example is Volvo Cars - they don't complain and they are doing really well. Why? Because they had the foresight to partner with Geely years ago, they have done the hard work of disrupting themselves and now it's paying off. There is no way a Ford or a VW is capable of doing this even if they wanted to so their only option is to resist. It won't work. It's a losing strategy. Ironically it will hasten these car companies demise.

In the same regards, China should also impose on Tesla to use only Chinese-based operating systems in their EVs sold in China-market to make sure any data collections will be rightly monitored by Chinese government since it is data of Chinese citizens.

As an Australian my sense is that the US is in panic mode realizing that China are innovating more than themselves with design and manufacturing, which has been a default criticism that China can’t design. That talk is seriously out of date and difficult for the West to handle.

You can also use national security excuses to only allow any chinese electronic/chip in any product such as cars, phones, laptop, cranes etc that are sold in china.

If China has no problem with Tesla, an American company, whose EVs are manufactured and sold in China, why should Chinese EVs be a problem in the US?  Tesla also collects a lot of data to improve their FSD.

America usually accuses other countries of what it is actually doing.  

On a separate note, this is America's strategy to cooperate where it benefits them and compete (or sanction) where it has a similar line of business. In other words, America will trade (cooperate) with Chinese companies in the short run where it does not have an alternative until a viable substitute is available.  Where Chinese companies are competing with US ones, they will sanction rather than compete honestly.

Every country take national security threat seriously.  BYD build a EV factory (GiGa) in Mexco and Hungry, Both nation  must reviewed BYD EV for national security threat.  Apparently none was found.  I do recall the national security threat of a Chinease weather balloon by two missile worth a few million each.
