KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee suffered a deep gash on her forehead, a cut on the nose and concussion after a fall at her Kalighat home on Thursday evening that state-run SSKM Hospital’s director attributed to “some push from behind”.

The Bengal CM was taken around 7.30pm to the hospital’s British-era Woodburn Ward, where doctors first stopped the bleeding and then closed the forehead wound with three stitches.

The cut on the nose required one stitch. She underwent a CT scan and an MRI, among other procedures, on the advice of a multidisciplinary medical board before being taken home at 9.45pm.

The theory about Mamata trip on something while entering her bedroom and falling on her face changed around 11pm when SSKM director Manimoy Bandyopadhyay suggested a mysterious “push” was the culprit. He spoke of her injuries but didn’t elaborate on the cause.

Mamata's sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee, a Trinamool councillor, added to the conspiracy theory, saying she heard that "Didi fell after a dhakka". The Bengali word can be interpreted variously, including "impact after colliding with something".

Another family member said Mamata "fell face first and hit the sharp edge of a small cabinet".

PM Narendra Modi wrote Mamata a get-well message on X. "I pray for a quick recovery and the best health for Mamata Didi," he posted.

Just election gimmick. Before every election during campaign she gets injured, gets her injured photos splashed all over the news and media and hype it up - just to get sympathy votes, as she knows Indians are emotional fools. Else, why and who would take a photo of her lying down with blood drip over her face instead of cleaning the wound and tending to it first. Not impressed. Now she will campaign with a bandage around her head. Last time it was the leg in cast.
