The freight ship collision that led to the collapse of a bridge in Baltimore, US, could have been a bigger catastrophe had it not been for quick thinking by the 22-member Indian crew on board Dali. Sailors issued a mayday call before the collision, allowing authorities to stop traffic on the bridge, preventing mass casualties. Only six people remain missing.

The four years between 2013 and 2017 saw a growth of 42.3% in shipboard jobs for Indian sailors. Mind you, India is some ways behind China, which contributes 33% of the world's sailors. There's a difference though. Most Chinese sailors work on board Chinese vessels, while India's seafarers work in national as well as foreign ships. Indian sailors are therefore more global. That can change when India builds and operates more ships.

Numbers Speak: The total number of Indian seafarers on ships increased from 1,08,446 in 2013 to 1,54,339 in 2017, as per latest data available. There were 62,016 Indian marine officers and 82,734 rating ship hands in 2017. These numbers have likely increased substantially since. In fact, recent estimates put the total number of Indian seafarers at 2,50,000 with 1,60,000 professionally-certified seafarers who serve cargo ships, and some 90,000 who serve on cruise liners.

As a merchant marine officer who has been rendered severely hearing handicapped, thus leading to being medically disqualified from seafaring, I have long been saying that indian officers torture their subordinates, violating safety and human ri hts. I am so profoundly hearing handicapped that leave alone seafaring, I cannot even get a job ashore as I can't even hear phone calls.

Worldwide ship has gone for automated systems, reducing crew size to a bare minimum. The Dali, with a compliment of 22 crew for a size of 10Teu is an example. Indian seafarers have acquitted themselves well.

Sailors job can be in isolation, away from family for long! Still, Work is worship. Employed there is way better than youngsters sitting idle consuming 1.5 free gb day-after-day and then seeking freebies, reservations.

The captain of M V Dali which collided with Baltimore Bridge is an Ukranian and not any Indian. Dirty fuel is the most likely cause for black out onboard. That fuel originated in USA. Two American Port Pilots were onboard guiding the ship out of Baltimore Port. Both American tugs escorting the vessel out of port were owned & manned by Americans. And still Indian Crew being targeted for the tragedy. Anti- India toolkit Brigade attempt to malign Bharat & Modi at the drop of hat without even fact check & completion of enquiry by USA authorities. Indian Seafarers are second to none in skill & knowledge. IMO safety & environment regulations guiding light was an Indian IAS Officer who was then head of IMO.

Basic question is why this accident happened? Whose mistake is this crew or hardware or both... May be judgmental error.. May be pilot coud not see bridge pillar.. No answer..

Mr writer, there are so many indians , because we work long hours for low pay with no low benifits. Most of this ship companies are penny pinchers , which run from tax haven countries. They dont want to pay overtime and other loadings normally paid otherwise. They known indians needs job and these ship companies exploit this. Safety rules are bipassed and can blame indian staff for thier maintenance problems.this is not about talent mr writer , this is explotation to core
