Depend on the circumstance.

During the Cold War, most of the US attention in South Asia is supporting Pakistan against India, since the latter is closer to USSR.

For example, in the 1971 India-Pakistan war, US supported Pakistan while USSR supported India.

Ironically, right after the India success in the war (which broke the old Pakistan into the present day Pakistan and Bangladesh), US attitude shifted to friendlier to India while USSR become more cautious.

And this is just one episode of many many different scenarios post WWII.

I guess a modern day reader would be more interested in some hypothetical immediate future scenario, such as, say, China vs India, Pakistan vs India, etc.

For such hypothesis, China’s strategic focus isn’t in the South Asia subcontinent and by the time its attention lifts from South China Sea and East Asia, either China would be ruins or US would have declined to be a none issue to China. In each scenario either US’ willingness or its ability to muster resource and send them to India is going to be limited. Because if China is in ruins, India is probably among the immediate list of targets to be the next enemy and if US is in ruins, then asking US for help will be a moot point.

And as far as Pakistan goes, its national strength really isn’t in a position to launch an attack at India. So there is a high chance that a new war between Pakistan and India (if it happens) would have India has the initiator. In that case there will be very little chance of US aid to India, since US needs Pakistan both to maintain their reach into Middle East and containment of India.

To be honest though, even if we completely ignore whether India can actually defeat even the Chinese border forces. At that point I really don’t see how the US aid can cover the cost of engaging in such a large war with China.

India and the US have a military tech trading agreement but not an actual alliance.

India spent a substantial chunk of its independent history basically telling the US to go jump in a lake and going its own way.

I hope Indians are not living in this delusion that in case of war against China, USA will be hel India. Indians were having same delusions regarding USA and Pakistan relationship. Once actual war starts we are on our own so we better deal with China kee that in mind.
