NEW YORK, March 21, 2024 — Asia Society Policy Institute, in partnership with Perry World House at the University of Pennsylvania, hosts a discussion on the U.S.-China relationship and how it impacts global trends. Speakers include Kishore Mahbubani, 2023-24 Schlager visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Perry World House; and Orville Schell, Arthur Ross director of the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations. Rorry Daniels, managing director of Asia Society Policy Institute, moderates the conversation. (1 hr., 9 min.)

I’m from the US.  I can tell you guys that Mr. Orville’s perspective of China are pretty much what the majority of peoples in the US thinks too.  Sadly our main stream media echos the exact same garbage of what he says over and over.  Americans don’t know that they’re just people like the rest of the world.  Majority of us pride ourselves thinking we are exceptional.  While that was true in the past, it certainly aren’t anymore.  We’re still living in a bubble.  So many still blindly believes that we’re that beacon of light, champion of freedoms.  We’re savior of the world and we need to spread de ocracy.  Lol, I don’t know what to say to my fellow Americans.  It’s like they’re on cracks or something.  They can’t seem to see through the thick smoke that America aren’t manufacturing much, the people aren’t motivated to work hard, gun violence is a norm, homeless is increasing, and inflation keeps climbing.  My question to Mr. Orville is if leadership is so important, what’s he gonna do if Trump is re-elected?  Stop talking bad about China, focus on our own problems will you?

Since 15th century China already trade  With Melaka. They never conquered us, only trade. BUT the west Portuguese,  English  and Dutch came with cannons  to conquer us and said we belong to them. They each stayed for years.

As an American who grew up abroad in diplomatic circles, Orville's utter lack of tact and diplomacy was shocking. Taking him as a representative of my country, from his outright aggression, his self righteous indignation, even his unkempt appearance, it is no wonder foreign leaders will ignore calls from our Whitehouse and State Department. I would ignore calls from unreasonable bullies as well. As other comments have stated, Kishore outclassed this man in every way

Orville is typical American; impolite and bashful. He rudely attacked Kishore right in the begng without going through his prepared remarks. How rude! He had more questions than responses. Clearly his body language screamed loud and clear his condescending attitude. Perhaps other than admitting that the U.S. needs to keep her own house in order, he said not much else. That was evident that he didn’t get any applaud at the end of his speech.

Applause to Dr Kishore, as a Chinese from Hong Kong, and as a citizen of SE Asian. What I (we) personally experienced of all the chaos of the riots funded and instructed by US, most of us awaken as it hurt every single families so deeply. That craziness broke us all apart yet at the same time, we all got united because we learnt that we have strong and determined leaders to protect us from enemies!

I live in SEA and I actually am rooting for China to win and be equal to USA. USA should not be the making the decision for the world and for us any more. Why the US comes all the way to South East Asia to tell Asean what they should or should not do? China is the largest exporter to the world. So isn't it China's interest to safeguard the waters in the South China Sea. Why has the Us poking its nose into the affairs of countries in the Far East?

No we in Asia does not mind with China rise . It’s the US that imagines that it’s a threat without solid evidence and it’s the one who coerces  her so called allies to gang up against  China like a bully gathering up his weaker counterparts  to a corner their victim in the school yard. The mediator is doing a great job . Taiwan is the first island chain in the south China seas and is only three hours from Fujian Province of China, therefore it’s of strategic interest to US hegemonic ambition.
