NEW DELHI: Domestic market leader IndiGo will finally be operating its own wide body aircraft. The Rahul Bhatia-founded airline has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350 aircraft and has optional purchase rights for 70 more of these big birds "for possible future needs under certain conditions." The A350 deliveries for IndiGo are expected to start from 2027.

India will now have two airlines -- Tata Group' Air India(Vistara too which will be merged into AI this calendar year) and IndiGo -- operate wide bodies between India and rest of the world. Eventually that will mean improved direct connectivity to and from India.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is learnt to have been considered by IndiGo but the unending nightmares -- that are only worsening with time -- at the US aircraft major led to the airline opt for its trusted Airbus where it has over 1,000 single aisle A320 family planes on order and is the biggest operator of this best-seller globally.
