Maldives foreign minister likely to visit India next week

马尔代夫外长或于下周访问印度

Maldives foreign minister Moosa Zameer is likely to visit India this month, TOI has learnt. Both sides are in touch diplomatically to finalise the dates for Zameer's visit but official sources suggested it could happen as early as next week.

《印度时报》获悉，马尔代夫外长扎米尔或于本月访问印度。双方正在进行外交接触，以最终确定扎米尔访问的日期，但官方消息人士表示，最早可能在下周。

If it happens, it will be the first high-level visit by either side since the Maldives' pro-China prez, Mohamed Muizzu, took office last year, defeating his India-friendly predecessor Ibrahim Solih.

如果确定来访，这将是自亲华的马尔代夫总统穆罕默德·穆伊祖去年击败亲印的前任易卜拉欣·萨利赫上台以来，双方首次进行的高层访问。

India's ties with the Indian Ocean neighbour have taken repeated hits since then with Muizzu working to limit defence and security cooperation with India, most notably by asking New Delhi to pull out troops operating Indian choppers in the archipelago and walking out of a bilateral agreement that allowed Indian Navy to carry out hydrographic surveys in Maldivian waters.

The visit will take place in the middle of the Indian parliamentary elections, making Zameer likely the last high-profile foreign dignitary India will host during PM Modi's second term. The visit will also come around the May 10 deadline that Male had set for India to withdraw its troops and replace them with civilians. India reluctantly acquiesced to the demand, kee in mind the geopolitical importance of the country which is where most of the major Indian Ocean ship routes pass through and where China has made a dramatic comeback since Muizzu took office.

Muizzu chose China for his first state visit in Jan, becoming the first de ocratically elected Maldivian prez to travel to the country before visiting India. He signed a number of agreements with Beiing during his visit and another later for free defence assistance from China. The visit will follow the Maldives parliamentary elections that saw Muizzu's party wng a super majority in parliament .

今年1月，穆伊祖选择了中国作为他的首次国事出访地，成为第一位在访问印度之前访问中国的马尔代夫民选总统。他在访问期间与北京签署了一系列协议，后来又签署了一项国防援助的协议。此次访问之前，马尔代夫举行了议会选举，穆伊祖的政党在议会中赢得了绝对多数席位。

India should treat Maldives as any other sovereign nation and use standard diplomatic procedures during their FM visit. Maldives requires India more than India need Maldives. So when they realize this they will behave accordingly. Till that time let them ruin their economy since they need to understand there is no free lunches .. Sri Lanka and Pakistan are already established sufferers in the hands of China.

In international geopolitics, one has to focus on one's own interests, and not be swayed by someone else's losses or gains. Maldives is critical to India to counter Chinese influence and power in the Indian Ocean and hence we need to adopt a suitable carrot and stick approach with them.
