Detroit automakers like General Motors made a fortune selling cars to Chinese consumers after the Asian country opened its auto market to foreign firms in the 1980s. But the good times are over as Chinese firms have caught up with the foreign firms who once taught them the automotive trade. Top names like BYD, Geely and Great Wall are now making globally competitive products and many companies with tech backgrounds are entering the industry, too, including Li Auto, XPeng, Nio, iaomi, Huawei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba. Jeep’s joint venture already went bankrupt, and one industry analyst said he expects Ford and GM to withdraw from the country in the next five years along with other such as Hyundai, Kia and Nissan.

China invested in its own development only a fraction of what US did on sparking wars in Middle East. And that brought outsized results to China.

In 2010, it's 4.93 million vs 540,000.
In 2022, it's 3.5 million vs 3.11 million.
In 2023, China overtook Japan's 4.42 million exports with 4.91 million and became the largest car exporter by number.
It's not just the US.

Those who doubt the Chinese, don't really understand China. They have the scale, work ethic, and the brains to take the lead in nearly every industry. It's just a matter of time.

The problem for these companies is that it's becoming ever more apparent that in order to compete globally, the product needs to be built in China, like Tesla is doing. So any tariffs put in place affect not only Chinese companies but also western companies that produce in China, hence the reason that VW and Mercedes-Benz are pushing back against EU tariffs.

When one considers that mid to premium cars in China have wireless phone charging, heated/cooled cup holders and/or a fridge, heated/cooling/massaging chairs, screens in the back for children, huge screens with various entertainment/driving features, heads up displays and self-driving/parking features, priced at say $30k-$70K is it any wonder that foreign companies can't compete?
