India's foreign secretary travelled to Dhaka for a two-day trip, the first by an Indian official since Sheikh Hasina's re-election in January this year. The visit comes amid multiple moves by China, aimed at securing a strategic foothold in Dhaka. Last month, China and Bangladesh announced their first-ever joint military drill. New reports also say that Dhaka is seeking a $5 billion soft loan from Beiing to bolster their foreign exchange reserves. In a statement released after the visit, India called Bangladesh its "leading partner in development". Dhaka's statement emphasised on the Teesta river, which has been a flashpoint between the two countries.

印度外交秘书前往达卡进行为期两天的访问，这是自今年1月谢赫•哈西娜连任以来印度官员首次访问达卡。

此次访问正值中国采取多项举措，旨在确保在达卡的战略立足点。

Well, if India wishes to keep China away from Bangladesh then the Indian government needs to treat Bangladesh with little more respect and equity. A fairer water sharing agreement will be a good starting point.

I see a country filled with jealousy and insecurity , thinking that all of South Asia must ask India's permission before they can do anything good for their economy. It seems like India wants to be the only foreign country for any project in the region. Why is India thinking like this? This is why neighbouring countries don't like India's way of dealing with them. If Bangladesh gets help from China and it's good for them, why shouldn't they accept it? India’s foreign policy seems to say that if India has problems with any country, its neighbors should also stop their economic, cultural, military, and diplomatic relations with that country. This is a very selfish and narrow-minded way to handle diplomacy.

Bangladesh has been a close ally of India. In our daily language, from our Prime Minister to a rickshaw puller, everybody refers to the country as Bharat instead of India. Bangladesh has made numerous efforts to benefit India, whereas India has yet to reciprocate. India is our neighbour, we cannot change it. We Bangladeshis respect our relationship, we have historical ties. But some issues scare our trust, Tista is the one of them. India built dams on every river that enters Bangladesh since early 80s.

They block rivers and during summer all crops die due to lack of irrigation. And they open the gates during Monsoon and causes flooding.

When will India act like a "friend" and listen to these issues?

If never, then China is the only other solution.
