President Biden on Tuesday announced new tariffs on certain Chinese goods, including a whop 100% tariff on electric vehicles (EVs) made in China. The policy could prevent the world’s most popular, most affordable EVs from ever making their way onto America’s roads.

“We’re going to protect the American autoworker,” Biden told Yahoo Finance shortly after announcing the new tariffs, which he said were designed to derail China’s plan to “flood the market with EVs” and “put everybody else out of business.”

拜登总统周二宣布对部分中国商品征收新关税,其中对中国制造的电动汽车征收高达100%的关税。这项关税政策可能会阻拦全球最受欢迎、最实惠的电动汽车进入美国市场。

The reason the president believes workers at companies like Ford and General Motors need protection is that China has rapidly become a dominant global force in electric vehicle production. Thanks to hefty government investment, cheap labor and their country’s robust reserves of key minerals, Chinese automakers have developed a wide range of EVs that are of comparable quality to anything made in the United States but often sell for a fraction of the price.

It took two decades for US auto makers to make cars as good (and as inexpensive) as Japanese makers, but they eventually figured it out. If they want to remain in business, they'll have to figure this out too. Tariffs are not the answer. Making better products is.

The reason the Japanese made better cars is early on the "father of quality" Edward Deming approached the domestic automakers with his "Philosophy of Continuous Improvement" (14 Steps to Total Quality Management Principles) or Kaizen as known in Japan. He was turned down by all of the domestic automakers. Deming went on to Japan where they quickly adopted his philosophy.

Read his book Out of the Crisis as well as Juran and others. At a time when American manufacturing needs to get back on track, might be a good time to have another look at what Deming was saying. Boeing sure didn't listen.

I studied not only Deming but Dorian Shainin and have a Journeyman's certificate in statical problem solving. I spent 30 years with GM Powertrain division the last ten in Quality. But they were never serious about quality, it came second to making schedule.

American cars are no where as good and as inexpensive than the Japanese. Like Minivan and sedans, America only made trucks and SUV behemoths because those are expensive to begin with.

Well, that's sort of true but leaves out a HUGE part of the issue. China's government will fund the production of sale of cars at zero or even negative profit in order to drive American manufacturers into bankruptcy.

Sorry, but the US still makes inferior vehicles compared to Japan & Korea. I have a 2021 Ford Ranger with only 25K and it has had many issues that required it to go in the shop. My Toyota had 160K miles on it and never needed anything except normal services.

The average person is so ignorant when it comes to trade. Tariffs are necessary to protect the country from unfair trade practices. It is also a large source of revenue for Treasury. Our countries production and products they make are fine. But China subsidizes these companies making cheap products that undercut our industry.
