India: Schools Revise Timings Due to Extreme Heat. Is it a Solution?

Indian Meteorological Department, India’s weather bureau, had issued a heatwave warning. This is the second heatwave in three weeks. It is common knowledge that extreme heat disrupts education. Since April, Indian schools have revised timings and issued closures due to heat. India is not alone here. With climate change, uninterrupted school year is becoming uncommon. 40 million students were shut out of classrooms in recent weeks across Asia and Africa. After all, heat lowers a child's ability to focus, retain and process information. Extreme heat also causes health problems among students. It is clear that schools are unprepared to deal with extreme heat. Should school revise their timings? Palki Sharma tells you.

Here in India .. schools already start so early...Children hardly get any breakfast time with their parents..their siblings...

While revising time if some people can put up the importance of this Family time in a child's life. So many times just in rush they are going to schools without eating anything... Result they pass out in the assembly times itself.

Schools time can be shifted to evenings maybe and with less hours.

The entire south, east and west India had been under a heatwave just few weeks back. Temperatures in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore , Mumbai etc were extremely high, even in the middle of the night. Yet the media only started crying now, as now it’s north India’s turn to face the heat.

And I’m slee with a blanket in Meghalaya. Yesternight it rained and it is windy here and cloudy currently. Our state is blessed with vegetation and forests. Though many criticised our state for less development but we are satisfied with little development and infrastructure as well.

While timing can be a short term and transitional thing, I think, ultimately we need to address the main issue and not merely deal with covering symptoms. I don’t know how viable this idea is but can me make schools cooler? Like ensure trees in the vicinity etc. Also, students usually faint in open ground and assemblies, so can we rethink upon school infrastructure so that it is much cooler, covered and ventilated. So can we think of something to address that. Like apart from timing, we can think about all this as well. It’s disheartening we’re already seeing how we are leaving nothing good for next generation

In my whole school and academic life in 1990s and early 2000s we had maybe 4 heavy rain holidays (different years) and no one complained of too much heat during summers. Last year my kids stay a week home just because of heavy rains and summer this year, unbelievable, God save us.

Not just the school timing but also the academic year timing should be changed. For India it can be like from 1st June to 31st March. April and May should be vacation.School hours should be from 9 am to 4 pm so that the commute is not putting kids under the hot Sun.

不仅要改变学校上课时间，而且要修改学年时间。对印度来说，比如从6月1日到3月31日。四月和五月应该设为假期。上课时间应该从早上9点到下午4点，这样上下学的路上就不会让孩子们暴露在烈日下。
