More than 140 passengers and crew from a Singapore Airlines flight hit by heavy turbulence that left dozens injured and one dead finally reached Singapore on a relief flight Wednesday morning after an emergency landing in Bangkok.

A 73-year-old British passenger died of a suspected heart attack, and at least 30 people were injured. "I saw people from across the aisle going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling and landing back down in like really awkward positions. People, like, getting massive gashes in the head, concussions," Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student onboard the flight, told Reuters after arriving in Singapore.

Photographs from the interior of the plane showed gashes in the overhead cabin panels, oxygen masks and panels hanging from the ceiling, and luggage strewn around. A passenger said some people's heads had slammed into the lights above the seats and broken the panels.

Singapore Airlines took 131 passengers and 12 crew on the relief flight from Bangkok, which reached Singapore just before 5am (2100 GMT). There were 211 passengers including many Australians, British, and Singaporeans, and 18 crew onboard the original flight; injured fliers and their families remained in Bangkok.

Turbulence is normal phenomenon and we all have faced it many a times while flying especially in summers. On 27 Apr 2024, I was travelling in Vistara airlines from Bengaluru to Chandigarh and pilot pulled up just above Chandigarh airfield realising that landing in a turbulent weather was not possible and then we experienced a severe upward draft of a few seconds of maybe a few hundred feet and all our hearts were in the mouth. Later we had a rough and extremely bumpy landing. I think since we all were strapped up while landing no one hit anything. This Singapore airlines must have encountered very rough and severe weather probably.

Everyone MUST and always wear seat belts while traveling by air. Such turbulences - may be less severe - do happen and these days air travel has become common. In this case those who wore seat belts suffered no (zero) injuries.

Salute the pilots really but the injuries could have been reduced if the passengers had belts on them. Belts saves lives and i have seen so many

Some advance technology should be included to avoid such pockets and areas, some radar which might detect the thin air much earlier to avoid sudden turbulence. I think it can be done with1000 satellites on earth sky.
