It's so tough to pay cash in China that the government had to fine a KFC for not accepting banknotes

China recently fined several businesses, including a KFC, for refusing to accept cash.

These are some of the most established companies in China, showing just how quickly cash has fallen from favor there.

It's a problem for a China ho to attract foreign tourists who aren't part of the cashless system.

China's central bank fined seven businesses last week — including a KFC and branches of state-owned corporations — for rejecting cash payments, all as Beiing pushes to make spending more accessible for foreign tourists.

The bank said it fined a KFC in Wux, Jiangsu, about $4,140 for refusing to take cash from a customer who ordered breakfast.

I just spent 6 weeks visiting China and I had absolutely no problems using WeChat, AliPay or cash.  You can now register your US based (or any country) credit card to either WeChat or AliPay which makes it extremely easy.  The only caveat is you get charged an extra 3% of any transaction over 200 Yuan.  In those instances I just pay with Chinese Yuan.  I event ate at one of their KFCs and had no problem using cash.

You also can buy things from the grocery store only using your face , it scans it and deducts it from your WeChat balance.

China has reached nearly 1/2 billion surveillance cameras in China. And along with China's facial recognition technology, social media monitoring, phone monitoring, it must make a miserable life to live in China's Digital ... soon to be copied in North Korea and Russia.

a recent China visit left me bewildered as to how many businesses -- and government entities -- do not accept cash, trying to find an ATM there is challenging.

nevertheless this no-cash culture could very well be the future as similar is being seen in the West to some degree, sure might cut back on robberies...

WanHeungLo

ATMs are everywhere, I'm very suprised that you had a problem.

Good for China. The rush to go cashless leave the elderly and foreigners left out if they still rely upon bank notes. A few fines and intervention by the central government should be a reminder to follow the law...

"It's illegal in China to reject cash for purchases".

The United States needs a law like that. Who wants to use a card to buy a $3.00 cup of coffee?

Just get rid of visa requirement for short term visit and you will see an immediate boost in tourism!

Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland will now be allowed to enter the country without a visa. It seems there are still some that it does not particularly want to encourage.

Just for comparison, several US state mandates certain type of business like retailers and restaurants to accept Cash for goods and service.

Reason is About 20% Americans don't have a bank account.

Alex

That is not true. Restaurants, shops and others always accept cash. But you've got to be prepared they won't give you any change.

Never had this issue once in years worth of visiting China

I am telling you! once you've used digital payment, you'll never want to go back to the plastic.

Credit cards are going the way of the dinosaur. Terrible technology.

China experts: look, China so poor, no cash!

BaconSmoothie42

It's part of being a "3rd world undeveloped" country .

That's why they don't have to meet global pollution standards.

Jack

yea, they so poor no more paper to print money like us

Accepting cash is more work, you have to go to the bank to deposit.  It’s called the cash carrying cost.

Mr Math

Well, swi a card isn't free for the vendor either.

Mike

Most businesses in China don't accept credit cards either. Many accept only alipay and wechat which charge about 0.1% or less.

KC

But it's good for the pay or because it's like an interest free loan. China's way is like a debit card transaction here.

Jenniana

Get your counterfeit problem under control and I'm 100% sure the "nobody wants cash" problem will solve itself soon thereafter.

BRIAN

Wouldn't be smart to produce counterfeit notes in a country where cash is rarely used. It would be ridiculously difficult to distribute an small amount of counterfeit notes into circulation without getting caught.

BaconSmoothie42

I wish they would make that a law in the USA. I can't pay my rent with cash or check now.

WanHeungLo

Just back from 8 months there, no problems paying cash for anything.

tigerclaws

I went to China a couple years ago

Credit cards didn’t work only Alipay  but luckily I had cash on me

Mr Math

If I can't pay cash, they lose my business.

Ben

it is all about controlling everyone. All electric money can be easily monitored by the chinese. They can take all your money ANYTIME they want.

Speak like a real China expert

Jazz

I like cash. Harder to have anyone know when or what I bought.

China's economy is dying. Without America's help, China can not survive.
