China's new aircraft carrier flew a signalling flag during its first sea trials in May 2024, not a Japanese flag, contrary to false claims circulating on social media. The China State Shipbuilding Corporation, which manufactured the vessel, confirmed the flag is in fact used by ships to communicate with each other.

"Why is the Chinese Co unist Party flying the Japanese flag on its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, during sea trials?" read the simplified Chinese caption of an X post on May 4, 2024.

The accompanying image shows a vessel flying several flags, including one that has a red circle in the centre, similar to that of Japan's national flag.

The false claim surfaced after China conducted maiden sea trials of the Fujian, its third and largest aircraft carrier, on May 1, 2024. The tests were a key next step in a vast naval build-up by Beiing as it carves out a more assertive role for itself in the Pacific and beyond.
