'Don't stand in way': SC directs Haryana to supply HP's 137 cusec water to Delhi

NEW DELHI: Aiming to help the capital overcome a severe water crisis, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed Himachal Pradesh to release from Friday 137 cusecs of surplus Yamuna water voluntarily offered from its share and ordered Haryana to release this excess water from Hathnikund barrage to Wazirabad reservoir in Delhi.

As a bench of Justices P K Mishra and K V Viswanathan solicited cooperation from Haryana to get over the water crisis caused by an unusually hot summer, Haryana through additional advocate general Lokesh Sinhal said the state too faced severe heatwave and has no extra water to spare for Delhi after releasing an extra 330 cusecs of water over and above Delhi's legitimate share.

When Sinhal doubted the surplus water claim of HP, the bench said, "We are not directing Haryana to release excess water. Water is coming from Himachal Pradesh. Haryana will only be carrying it through its canals to Delhi. Do not stand in the way." Himachal's additional advocate general Vaibhav Srivastava placed the data on surplus water before the bench.

For Delhi govt, senior advocate A M Singhvi said that the city, reeling under a water crisis, needed the additional water only till June 30 or till the arrival of monsoon, whichever is earlier. "Haryana is adopting a completely obstructionist approach when Himachal is ready and willing to share its surplus water," he said.

complete failure of AAP govt in delhi. in throwing money away in freebies and sheesh mahal and legal fees for kejriwal, they have no funds for develo water storage system etc. I agree with SC decision and applaud them for directing himachal govt that they need to measure water they give to haryana. congress himachal govt and aap delhi govt wanted to cheat haryana. SC should have pulled the AAP govt. last, it is said there are tens of thousands of illegal rohingyas in delhi taking away more water. this should be ascertained whether true or not.

SC is only considering the problems being faced by Delhi people of which they are part. Why cannot the supreme court ask the AAP government to put on record what measures have they taken in the last ten years to mitigate this problem recurring every year. If someone is getting something free it's wastage will not pinch him. By offering freebies the fact is that AAP has very little funds for strengthening infrastructure.

Where was the SC when Bangalore was facing this issue. Just because the judges are facing issue with water they have directed the haryana govt. Hope SC is more neutral and decide similar issues irrespective of the geographical location.

The reasons for water shortage in Delhi must be probed. if it is due to the sudden increase in the population, all concerned must try to ascertain the causes for the increase in population that too in the capital city of Delhi. How far is our capital city safe because of the accumulation of not fully identified people there?

Real issue is population. Delhi population has increased from 1 cr to 2.5 cr so it is trying to justify more water. However, other states also have similar problems, they don’t have unlimited water.
