BEIG (AP) — The chinese is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles.

北京(美联社)—就在欧盟宣布将对中国制造的电动汽车征收临时关税几天后，中国并未对德国汽车制造商采取相应措施，而是迅速将矛头指向欧洲农民，对欧盟的猪肉进口展开调查。

The Commerce Ministry didn't mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dum investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars. It also gives China a bargaining chip in any trade negotiations.

中国商务部周一宣布，将对来自欧洲的猪肉展开反倾销调查时，但并未提到电动汽车关税，但此举普遍被外界视为是中国对欧盟宣布将向中国电动汽车征收关税的回应。这也让中国在贸易谈判中拥有了谈判筹码。

China could have slapped a 25% duty on imports of gasoline-powered vehicles with large engines in the name of combating climate change, a step that would would have hit Mercedes and BMW hard. In choosing not to do so, at least for now, the government may be acknowledging the public opposition of the German auto industry to the EU tariffs.
