NEW DELHI: Tragedy befell Uttar Pradesh's Hathras on Tuesday where at least 116 people were killed in a stampede that occurred during a 'satsang' (religious gathering).

周二，悲剧降临在北方邦的哈特拉斯，至少116人在宗教集会期间发生的踩踏事件中丧生。

In their initial response to the massive casualties, the police said overcrowding led to the stampede as was in a video being widely circulated on social media.

"As per the information that we have received so far, deaths of 116 people have been confirmed and 18 are injured.

Preliminary investigation is also going now," Aligarh Commissioner Chaitra V told news agency PTI.

Here's what we know so far:

    In the stampede at least 116 people have been killed, most of them women. Rescue effort is under way.

    Local officials and emergency responders are on the scene, and a thorough investigation is on to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic event.

    A team consisting of ADG Agra and Aligarh Commissioner has been constituted to enquire into the cause of the incident, an official source said.

    Victims, dead or unconscious, were brought to the Sikandara Rao Trauma Centre in trucks and other vehicles.

    The satsang was reportedly being held by Sakar Vishwa Hari Bhole Baba, formerly known as Saurabh Kumar.

    President Droupadi Murmu expressed her deepest condolences to those who lost their family member in the incident.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha condoled the loss of many lives in UP's Hathras, said victims will be provided all help.

    Chief minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede. He instructed officials to reach the accident site and carry out relief measures.

    CM Yogi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the families of the dead and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.

    Amid the relief efforts, PM Modi has spoken to the chief minister.

    Home minister Amit Shah spoke to the CM to gather facts about the incident and assured all possible central assistance to the state. The chief minister is also likely to visit Hathras on Wednesday.

    An NDRF team will soon reach Hathras, Amit Shah stated in a tweet.

When such a big gathering of people take places,what the police department was doing? Don’t they have primary responsibility of seeing safe conduct of Satsang and importantly dispatching of crowd in safe manner? Utter failure of authorities! Who will take responsibility? Is it enough to close the case by paying some money?

it is a very sad reading. Why are people so superstitious? All these satsangs, parvachans and baba's should be restricted and confined to a very small gatherings. All are there to look to one's own interest, achieving personal gains. The authorities become active only after some big tragedy like this.

Can't you leave politics aside for a moment? You know Yogi or Akhilesh had nothing to do with the incident. Why bring politics in? On top of it, you bring words like namaz etc in a Hindu congregation!!! Shame on you. Please console the deaths, offer solutions for future if possible. Condolences to the bereaved family.....May the departed souls rest in peace. Now a days prayers have become Showbiz... They are done showing people of other religions about their power and might....it's done not on devotion but to instigate other religion people... That's why there will be road blocks, procession ...shouting loudly ... But if you are truly devoted then avoid crowded gatherings which i always do.
