NEW DELHI: Cabinet is likely to take up eight major highway development proposals worth around Rs 50,000 crore for approval on Friday. These projects are spread across Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal.

TOI has learnt that the projects include 68-km Ayodhya Bypass, 121-km Guwahati Ring Road, 516-km Kharagpur-Siliguri expressway, 6-lane Agra Gwalior greenfield highway (88 km) and an 30-km long elevated highway having eight lanes between Nasik and Khed (Pune).

All the projects will be built on public private partnership (PPP) mode, sources said. NHAI has invited bids for most of these projects and has held rounds of meetings with highway developers to elicit more interest among them.

Since all these big projects cost more than Rs 1,000 crore under PPP needs to be appraised by inter-ministerial panel of PPPAC and must get the cabinet's approval for bidding. "There are some players who are keen to take up only PPP projects. We have got good feedback. Once the cabinet gives its nod, we will go ahead with awarding them," an official said.

It's not enough to BUILD highways. The need is to MAINTAIN them, to manage the joints on flyovers and bridges (which slow down speed since they still are not joined well enough)

That is because the state govt. there do not co-operate to provide land for development of the road projects, like the railway ministry is unable to proceed because the Kerala and the TN gove have not made available land for the project.

In Kerala - Thrissur to Guruvayur road’s condition is very very pathetic n cannot drive even 10 kms speed. Co unist and Congress goverments done so far nothing, unluckly there were no minority mosques in between.

just for the argument sake ; Congress coming back to power would have not go into building the infrastructure rather they believe in putting money in the pockets of common man which keeps the economy buoyant for a while and dividends are reaped in the elections.,now BgP's agenda is different and it believes in transforming the nation overnight which is impossible. Amongst the public a sense of belonging has to happen, a sense of my nation has to be grilled into the psyche, only then there will be accountability from all concerned. For this to happen, there needs to be more pan-India cultural exchange, rural games, camaraderie among the youth and nationalist feeling are the key ingredients.

high ways roads in "has changed the landscape in last 10 years. and one reader mentioned the condition of roads inside the cities. well, the center government is responsible for highway and state governments are responsible for roads in side the cities which are govern by many opposition parties, which are inefficient and curupt.

Why not build water drainage systems first for rain water harvesting...what is the point in creating concrete jungles and arid cities with zero infrastructure and then building super highways and bullet trains to ferry people, water and supplies....how is this climate friendly and reduce carbon footprint....people tend to work in a siloed manner like 7 blind men and the elephant
