For a decade now, Modi has urged foreign companies to move their production lines to the subcontinent, under a flagship "Make in India" policy aimed at transforming the world’s fifth-largest economy into a manufacturing hub.

The rise of AI/Automation/Robot makes India's cheap labor less advantegous. Cheap labor now comes to Vietnam, Bangladesh or even Africa. China is increasingly producing the machines that create factories (like Germany in the past). Vietnam imports such machines and leverages their cheap labor to make stuff. China is moving up to higher value supply chain. Beside, China also provides raw materials, e.g. rare earth with unbeatable prices. It is actually increasingly difficult for India to catch up!

India is already manufacturing powerhouse, but it is not running upto it's potential. Previous govt (socialist) were not in favour of mfg, one prominent congress MP said mfg should not be encouraged and should concentrate on services. But question is with automation, will mfg sector employ high number of people.
