Vietnam’s newly minted Co unist Party chief To Lam began his three-day trip to China on Sunday (Aug 18). It was his first overseas state visit since becoming the new party chief earlier this month. Nguyen Khac Giang, visiting fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute Vietnam Studies Programme weighs in on the relationship between both countries. He tells CNA's East Asia that Vietnam needs the support of China to maintain its survival.

The reality is that Vietnam is trying to seek the best of its relationship with all the countries in the world .

So, on the one hand, it is trying to gain benefits from China, while at the same time it is also making it clear if given the situation it want to have something more by linking up with Philippines,  the US or even India.

China is not blind to the moves of Vietnam and so long as the relationship does not cross any red lines of China ...why not ?  It is good to be friendly to all and enemy to none .

现实情况是，越南正试图与世界上所有国家建立友好关系。

一方面，越南试图从中国获利，而同时，与菲律宾、美国甚至印度保持联系，以获得更多的东西。

Singapore, the smartest country, as well as the most successful one in ASEAN, has been playing smart geopolitical balancing games between super powers for decades, for the maxmum benefit of the country, without being squeezed and sacrificed as cannon fodder by the US or China.

Filipino people always look at the success of Singapore with envy, and wonder why they can't replicate the best practices in their homeland and why their country is still deeply trapped in US colony mentality without a clear way out.

Truth hurts. A smart leader plays smart geopolitical games and invites American and Chinese companies to build factories in order to generate jobs and increase revenue, while a clueless leader easily gets emotional like a kid, often is played by geopolitical players as chess pieces, invites foreign military to build bases in order to generate tensions and increase the risk of conflicts, and sacrifices the country's development and trade.

Japan and S. Korea can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display.

Other countries such as China and the Philippines can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on South China Sea, Taiwan, MILF or whatever, and develop their relationship.  

Soon, even Laos and Cambodia will become richer than the Philippines. The Philippines will only compare better than Myanmar.

It is really hard to explain to those without a rational mind, to many, they believe sovereignty means everything, but in international relations or country to country relations, sovereignty is only a small part from the larger picture. Sovereignty issues is often associated with nationalism, and nationalism is often associated with domestic politics. How do you get people to support you? Play the sovereignty card. This is something Vietnam understood very well, but for the Philippines, not so much.
