lets not forget that large potions of the US navy vessels are basically broken or being parted out. so many US ships are falling apart. tonnage doesnt mean anything if the ship cant even leave port. just a giant paper weight.

I've got even some more bad news about the gap in STEM graduates between China and the U.S. Some of the graduates from U.S. schools are from China. I went to graduate school 30 years ago in computer science in a well-known  state university. HALF of the students in the department were from China, 20% were from India, and some were from Europe. Very few were Americans. The tech race with China was lost long ago.
