MUMBAI: A statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, unveiled around 9 months ago on December 4 last year by PM Modi on the occasion of Navy Day at Rajkot fort in Malvan in Sindhudurg district, collapsed on Monday, an official said. While CM Eknath Shinde described the incident as “unfortunate” and promised to reinstall it, saying that “due to strong winds of around 45 kmph,” the statue “erected by the Navy... fell and got damaged”, opposition parties slammed the state govt, alleging it had paid little attention to the quality of work.

The 35-foot steel statue collapsed at around 1 pm, the official said. Experts will ascertain the exact cause of collapse, but the district has witnessed heavy rain and gusty winds over the last two to three days, he said. Senior police and district administration officials reached the site to take stock of the situation and assess the damage, he said.

官员称，这座35英尺高的钢质雕像在下午1点左右倒塌。他说，专家会查明倒塌的确切原因，但该地区在过去的两三天里经历了狂风暴雨，高级警察和地区行政官员已赴现场查看情况并评估损失。

Sindhudurg guardian minister Ravindra Chavan, who holds the PWD portfolio, said, “A case has been filed against the proprietor of the firm M/s Artistry, Jaydeep Apte, and structural consultant Chetan Patil (both involved in statue work) in Sindhudurg.” Chavan said, “The steel used in making of the statue had started rusting. The PWD had already written to the Navy informing them of the statue catching rust and requested them to take appropriate steps.”The Navy also said it has deputed a team to repair and restore the statue at the earliest.

The opposition, though, blamed the govt. Sena (UBT) MLA Vaibhav Naik said, “State govt may try to evade responsibility. People responsible for construction and erection of the statue must be probed thoroughly” .

Blaming all political parties is an easy way out. what's incredibly worrying is that the design of the statue was obviously very poor: this can be seen in the photo where the statue has broken off at the ankles, indicating low wall thickness of the material, or poor casting of it has been cast. the worrying part is the pathetic skills of design, calculations, engineering rigor and quality consciousness on part of the technical fraternity of this country. And the same persons may also be designing and executing projects like bridges, dams etc!!!

Why is the name if the contractor and deaigner not nafe public? The accounts must be made public. How much of our tax monet was squandered on this vanity project? Why is not money not used to improve infrastructure (riads, drainage, healthcare, education)

It appears that curreption in BJP rule has increased many fold. These bjp contractors and officials have made mickery of the ststem. PM and other responsible front runners should take note of it otherwise they may becwiped out of the political system. Accountability should be fixed and culprits should be punished without delay.
