NEW DELHI: A 5-year-old student was beaten to death allegedly by three minor students at a madrassa in northeast Delhi on Friday.

DCP (North East) Joy Tirkey said, “The mother of the child got a call from the madrassa to come and pick up her child due to his ill health on the evening of Aug 23. She rushed to the madrassa and took her child to a private hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival by doctors there.

The mother then returned to the madrassa with the boy’s body and a crowd gathered there.”

The body was sent to GTB Hospital for postmortem. The autopsy revealed severe internal injuries, including a ruptured liver, abdominal bleeding and bleeding in the right lung, apart from numerous eruptions and blisters on the child’s neck, abdomen and groin.

Following a preliminary probe, three minor students of the madrassa, including two 11-year-old boys and a 9-year-old boy, were apprehended.

During interrogation, the minors revealed two reasons why they had attacked the child—the boy had allegedly abused them verbally earlier and they thought that his death would result in a holiday, allowing them to return home. About 250 boys study in the madrassa, out of which about 150 are from outside Delhi.

Police said that CCTV footage partially confirmed these details and further investigation was underway.
