In India, Varanasi is considered a holy city. Millions of Hindus believe that people who die here, in this city on the Ganges, are lucky. Because if they are cremated here, they can break the eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth.

Director Oliver Mayer grew up in a world in which most people are influenced by the Christian promise of eternal life. In Varanasi, he wants to understand why it is considered salvation to escape a cycle of rebirth.

He himself has already had to come to terms with death: A few years ago, his mother died, and it took him a long time to come to terms with his grief. He is fascinated by the fact that the end of life is not necessarily seen as negative in Hinduism. He wants to know how people manage to face death pragmatically and without fear - indeed, almost looking forward to it.

Mayer visits a very special hospice for the dying in Varanasi. Here, he encounters a different, more relaxed approach to death. He meets extraordinary people. They include the priests and relatives who care for the dying, workers from lower castes who cremate the dead and children like nine-year-old Kajal, who poses for photos dressed as the deity Shiva to earn money to support herself, her mother and her little brother.

Varanasi, often regarded as the oldest city in India, sparked profound reflections within me. Varanasi holds immense spiritual significance, attracting countless people who seek salvation, especially as they near the end of their lives. This tradition of seeking liberation in Varanasi made me ponder the nature of life itself . In our earthly exstence, we often chase dreams, desires, and material gains, but this documentary reminded me that these pursuits are ultimately transient. No matter where we come from—whether from a developed, develo, or underdeveloped nation—our struggles and achievements are all bound by time. We all share the same inevitable fate, which transcends social classes, nationalities, and identities.

The documentary also led me to consider the idea of predestination. Our time on Earth is limited, and what truly matters isn't the material possessions we accumulate or the societal status we achieve, but the essence of who we are—our soul or spirit. In the end, it’s this essence that continues beyond our earthly lives. Varanasi, with its timeless appeal, serves as a reminder that life's ultimate journey is about moving beyond the physical and into the spiritual realm

I have seen many die in the hospital. it is difficult, but not having fear is a great help for the person who is passing, and their loved ones. I struggled at first, and wondered if I would ever cope with it. I discovered religion, whichever you choose, helps with the mental and emotional process. it is a major life event, that certainly is true.

I wish I lived in a country where there are many people of my religion, but I don't, so nearing my own death is more troubling than I wish.
