NEW DELHI: The IAF, Army and Navy vice-chiefs took to the skies in indigenous Tejas fighters on Monday, in an `unprecedented joint endeavour’ aimed at underlining self-reliance in defence production as well as the growing integration among the armed forces ahead of the impending creation of tri-Service theatre commands in the country.

Air Marshal A P Singh flew the `lead single-seat Tejas fighter’, while Lt-General N S Raja Subramani and Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan flew in the twin-seat variant, during the ongoing multi-nation `Tarang Shakti’ exercise at Jodhpur.

“It was a landmark event. Their joint participation in the exercise demonstrates the growing focus on cross-domain cooperation, with land, sea and air forces working together to face modern challenges,” an officer said.

India is showcasing the homegrown single-engine Tejas during its largest-ever air combat exercise Tarang Shakti, in which 67 fighters and military aircraft from 10 countries and observers from another 18 are taking part. The aim is to strengthen India’s military interoperability and strategic partnerships across the globe.

Tejas is crucial for the IAF to make up its depleting numbers, grappling as it is with just 30 fighter squadrons when 42 are authorised to tackle China and Pakistan. IAF, however, has till now inducted only 35-36 of the first 40 Tejas Mark-1 jets ordered for Rs 8,802 crore due to delays by defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics(HAL).

Government blames HAL. This is a game going on between HAL and the government because there is no money to order the engines within the time frames that the government is expecting for HAL to produce these jets.

I suggest that never more than two of the very important top heads of defense should take to sky together in the same plane or helicopter. Safety first. Many of the very expensive fighter plane accidents could have been avoided in the past if the following precautions were taken. 1. Before flight have the plane be thoroughly examined for at least two hours by very competent mechanics and engineers and by the pilot himself. 2. Let the pilots be selected only on the basis of merits and uniformly from all parts of India, proportional to the populations of the states. 3. The pilots must have a minimum degree of bachelor of engineer or science (math, physics or chemistry) honours from Institutions of repute and receive rigorous training in the engineering and science aspects of the aircraft for a year before taking off solo flight; (4) If the pilots detect any problem immediately after communication then they should easily communicate to the ground control and make effort to land; (5) they should be instructed to eject out only when they have lost all hopes of landing the planes safely, despite taling the measures mentioned above. If the above steps are followed and if IAF inducts more India made planes that would be continually upgraded, IAF may become invincible. That is what every Indian is looking for.

如果遵循上述步骤,印度空军引进更多国产飞机,并不断升级,印度空军可能变得不可战胜。

To develop any indigenous technology it can take years. Same thing is faced by Kaveri Engine. Thrust Deficiency and Weight Issues. The Kaveri engine consistently struggled to achieve the necessary thrust, falling short of the LCA's operational demands. Its weight also proved problematic, impacting the aircraft's overall performance.,So let's wait for some success in complete indigenous fighter plane. China stole the jet engine technology from USA.

Rolls roys and Sarfran were both ready to manufacture jet engines with full ToT but still chose GE. We should have gone for two companies to manufacture two types of Jet engines. Dual investment in engine manufacture would have saved us from many problems.

We Indians would do well to remember that no product - whether it be a toothpick or a fighter jet - should be considered 'indigenous' until it can be 100% (not an iota less) produced in India. And this should be an inviolable 'mantra' for all defence equipment.

Tejas is Definitely World-Class , even Better than Comparable Chinku stolen-Tech Jets .. This was even Proven 2 consecutive years in Competitive Air shows in UAE. In one of them Chinkus didnt even enter their jet knowing it wont even come close to Tejas.,The Main Issue is current Fighter jets across the world by the Front running compNies - Lockheed, Dassault etc - are all 7th Generation avionics and Tech. Tejas is 5th Gen. Therefore will it be able to keep edge in combat ? Only a real Combat can tell.
