The European Union voted on Friday to pave the way for tariffs of up to 35.3% on electric vehicles imported from China, a move that might set the stage for a protracted trade war with the Asian giant. The vote comes after a year-long anti-subsidy investigation by the European Commission, which proposed the tariffs to counter what it sees as unfair Chinese subsidies.

Germany has the most to lose in China. They depend on China for their growth and have for years. They secretly might like the tariffs. But must go on the record against them, as to not anger their largest market.

China is not Germany's largest market, not even close. Germany exports more cars to the UK, than to China. But their largest market is of course the US.

The main destination of Cars exports from Germany are: China ($20.5B), United States ($17B), United Kingdom ($12.3B), France ($8.89B), and Italy ($8.38B). The fastest growing export markets for Cars of Germany between 2021 and 2022 were United States ($3.82B), South Korea ($1.22B), and Belgium ($1.21B).

@LCCATCX you are correct, seems like i was looking at numbers for EU car exports, not just Germany. But it doesn't change the fact that the US was the largest market for German exports in 2023, with China being number 4.

@thegreatdane3627 it’s not just what does Germany export there. It’s what do they build there through joint venture. If you summed it all up it is a huge amount. VW would not have become the company they are without China. A few years ago when VW became the largest automaker in the world I was confused. I am an American. I rarely see vw cars on the road. But China made Vw number 1. I believe they lost the top spot tho.

European cars are over priced junk. This is the issue, they are far too expensive to buy, the tech makes them difficult and expensive to fix, they are engineered to fail just out of warranty.
I am seriously considering a Chinese electric vehicle for next purchase. If European manufacturers cannot build vehicles at the right price that people want they will look elsewhere.
In Europe it is all about big shareholder returns, not building good products anymore.
