Foreigners, what makes China look like China?

I am a local. I have never been abroad. I feel nothing Beiing-ish outside of its 2nd Ring.

Apparently I am not saying the ethnic group or the propaganda everywhere---you see the same in North Korea. I mean, the style or landscape

High rises in areas which are not dense.

Red banners with white or gold chinese characters everywhere.

Those red laterns hanging from the street lights.

Super wide roads always with seperate cycle / ebike lane (awesome).

Roads always have some fake police siren lights or fake speed cameras which flashbang you as you drive.

Immaculate parks where people don't go on the grass.

Everything is fenced or walled off into little xaoqus. Loads of security gaurds and little security booths, often with police siren lights as well.

Infrastructure porn right next to chaotic streets.

White / Black SUVs or large cars ONLY, no hatchbacks or other colours allowed (unless its one of those mini van things). If you cant get a large white or black german car or chinese knockoff, then you have an ebike.

coldfeetbot

New year 福 stickers in random doors or windows, or the red lanterns hanging around

Gated communities (小区)

High rises

The grilled windows even at the 27th floor. I’ve been told this is a safety measure for typhoons.

E-bikes everywhere and in every direction

Certain distinctive smells, for example Chinese public 厕所 or 羊肉串儿

Another China specific thing: people dont really go to bars/pubs to socialize over drinks and beers. Chinese people go out for dinner and drink alcohol in those restaurants.

The amount of vertical construction. Especially the blocks of similar looking high rises that are evenly spaced. You don’t see that in Canada at all. There are smallish cities in China (400k or so) with tons of high rises which you never see in Canada

Also the dedicated bike lanes with the green strip with trees separating the bike lane from the auto lanes. Love that stuff, we don’t have it in Canada and it’s pretty rare in Europe too

Everything within walking distance in a city - restaurants, fruit stores, convenience stores, shoe washing stores, laundry, home supplies, etc.

People slee everywhere - I love it - I had a one hour nap in a coffee shop today.

Parks with lakes and paths with people in them at 5:00 am doing all sorts of exercise

The 30-storey copy-and-paste residential highrises (usually in a gated community) are the most visually striking thing about urban China to me

White fences that prevent me from jaywalking unless I am ambitious and determined

The ubiquitous 3 wheeled silver tuk-tuk

Parking garage bike/scooter ramps that are just a little too steep

Chengguan roaming about making everyone's life less convenient.

Office teams doing morning stretches in front of the store. Possibly with a group chant

Some sun-tanned dude trying to sell a turtle at the stoplight

Insane bridges and highway overpasses

Skyscrapers lit up in neon

For me, it is simple:

China is local people getting out of their way to help you

Those dancing grandmas in front of a mall

Convenient and fast transportation

Loud advertisements and honking cars

The same applies to China - most tourists are in the lookout for buildings that they think, from preconceived notions, are Chinese. In other words, they are looking for pagodas, city walls and ancient buildings with upturned roof corners. The reality, of course, is that most Chinese towns and cities consist of cloned high-rise buildings but tourists don't like to accept that this is the case.

kidhideous2

There was a viral story a couple of years ago that Chinese tourists were going to visit suburban towns in south England and just walking around boring housing estates as tourists enjoying how quiet and bland it is

How do you know it's like North Korea if you haven't been anywhere?

The hutong architecture is unique to Beiing.

China is huge. So if I see the yellow river I know I'm in China.

Ayis holding kids over bushes, bins or random places in the street or shop mall while saying 'shhhhh' to help the kids piss/shit.

The blocks are massive in China compared to my country New Zealand. Usually two to five times as large. It makes places feel a lot less walkable, even when the infrastructure is set up for it.
