I'd like to explain why people often offer you cigarettes. In China, especially among middle-aged people, offering a cigarette to a stranger is a way of showing goodwill, similar to asking if someone has eaten. Young people smoke less and might not use this approach; instead, they may offer snacks or water in case you run out of supplies when outdoors.

Can u imagine a Chinese in England not knowing any English... Going around the country like u .Will he be treated the same way ??

no one assaulted you, no one tried to steal from you, no one insulted you, no one scammed you, no one tried to murder you, no one called police on you, police didn't try to arrest you...

except everyone was nice and kind to you and police also tried to help you and gave you multiple lift, a smoke and meal.

Hey. Mike. I am Chinese. You are so brave and kind. And This is so real. This is my country. Thank you for filming this. I almost cry.

In 2012 I was on my own in a 'small' city in Hubei, I was visiting a friend but he was really busy so I explored the city on my own, I ended up taking a bus and then getting stuck because I genuinely didn't have a clue where I was. An old dear saw me and used hand signals to tell me to follow her. She took me to her family home and fed me some great food. After two hours her son came home from work, he spoke some English and offered to drive me back to the hotel, half an hour away. I still e-mail him occassionally, his mom (who took me in) passed away a few years ago and he invited me for the funeral. I couldn't attend, but... Wow.

The Chinese are so friendly, we are constantly bombarded with negative messaging (some might call it propaganda) and I have no doubt that the government has some discutable ideas

As a Chinese, I'd like to offer you some advice. The place where you've been struggling to find a hitchhike is on the highway ramp, which is extremely dangerous for stop casually. Those who do stop for you are truly kind-hearted. Next time, try to ask them to take you to a highway service area, where numerous private cars make brief stops. The trucks you usually hitchhike with are mostly from nearby factories and won't travel too far. Moreover, they tend to drive slowly, usually in the rightmost slow lane to give way to smaller vehicles.

As a Chinese born and raised in injiang, the northwestern part of China, I've got nothing but thank you to say for filming the generosity and kindness you experienced in China. It is true that the northwestern part of China is the backwater in our country, but you may find the people there more hospitable and generous. I rarely comment, but your video really have moved me and made me a bit nostalgic (currently I'm in Australia).

The authenticity and warmth of the people in China towards a stranger like you is simply amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Hello, Mike. Regarding the incident with those six people at the toll booth. Due to a problem with the translator, in fact, the danger they mentioned is not the danger of hitchhiking. It's because that truck is a truck transporting chemical dangerous goods. The six of them are worried about your personal safety. Please don't misunderstand. In fact, they are very responsible behavior. Also, you are so amazing and incredible. Choosing to travel by hitchhiking in a completely strange country when there is a language barrier. You are truly remarkable.

The guy who gave you a bottle of water said, if you haven't eaten, I'll take you for a meal.

My brother lived in Shenzen for 5 years. ive visited him multiple times and went on roadtrips deep into the country and came to the same conclusion: its a wonderful country with wonderful people. The propaganda against china is outrageous and over the top. Geopolitical they may be an adversary but the people i've met are some of the nicest, inquisitive and hospitable.

Hey Mike, British geezer here, lived in China last 6 of 7 years. You are the real deal and you’ve got balls of steel. Your videos are genuine, I can’t say the same for the vast majority of YouTubers out there. You’ve represented the Chinese people in a good light, it’s an accurate description of the good people there. Well done for being bona fide!

As an American, it's very interesting and pretty cool to see these rural areas of China. It's a reminder that we're all humans just trying to live life.

Edit: I wasn't asking for an opinion, and I've been all over the world, but every country has propaganda. I was just saying it's nice to see average every day Chinese people doing their thing. The American government paints China as our enemy, but really it's stupid people and governments that pit us against each other. Whether it's China or America, no one is better than the other.

I've lived in China for 17 years and I'm from the UK too. From day 1 people were friendly, curious about me and generous to a fault. People are people, governments are governments, lets not confuse the two. The Chinese people are the reason I'm still working here. Your China videos have shown the true nature of the people of this amazing country. I thank you for that when there is constantly so much negative publicity about China. Keep up the great work mate!

I dont know anything about China, other than my country says they are the enemy . I dont believe that, of course. But to see how everyday people react to the lone white guy hitchhiking says alot about them. Here, I dont think that you would have been so well received, and I am ashamed of that.

Your video took me back to when I was a student about ten years ago, hitchhiking from Tib to Sichuan. Everyone I met along the way was incredibly kind. One truck driver even gave me a ride for three days, covering over a thousand kilometers. Since then, I’ve traveled all over the world and watched tons of travel videos. I just want to say, in China, as long as you can get past the language barrier and communicate well, you'll have a safe and amazing time.

Bro they're feeding you making sure you're safe, of course nothing is perfect, but the fact that they're just making sure you make it safe is beautiful, what a kind people, thank you for sharing your journey.

When you asked him "what's your name" in chinese, It sounded like "what is your ethnic group" ("Ni de MINGZI (name)" vs "Ni de MINGZU (ethnic group").

He basically told you that he was "Han Chinese" (Han Zu).

I am a Spanish guy living in China for 6 years now, and I am nothing but greatful for this country. The other day I had the first interaction with police, they called me and ask to come to my office or me to go inmediatly to the police station. I was scared to death. They waited for me until midnight, and all they wanted to do was talk to me because apparently some phone scammer gave me a call (luckily my Chinese is still so bad that I am unbearable even for them). They told me to be careful and still call me weekly to check on me and if I had any problem. Once a year, I report my taxes, show them that I am still being a good working citizen and then extend the visa for one more year.

This is nothing but a great place, with extremelty honest and hard working people. There are some bad apples and for sure some cultural diferences, but the opportunities I am getting here is something I could only dream back home. Fair taxes, fair play, great people. If I have to complain about something, is the fact that even I love it I will never be able to afford to buy a house here and I will never be a Chinese, but hey, those are their rules, I respect them and enjoy the ride.

I’ve worked in China a few times and travelled a lot of the country for work. Very similar experience, China is an amazing place with humble friendly people.

When you and Mr. Chan said goodbye, I noticed the sign on the security desk that read 'No Photos or Videos Allowed,' but the officer sitting behind seemed to notice the friendship between you two and didn’t intervene, even looking happy about it. As a Chinese person living in the US, thank you for showing me a different side of our homeland. It truly warmed my heart.

I worked in China for 5 months in 2011 and again  2012 .  I was l8ving in Baotou , Inner Mongolia .

It was a wonderful experience . People were lovely . They were so helpful and so hospitable .

Sometimes I get homesick for China .

This video proves once again that no matter where you go in the world, people are human. It doesn't matter whose flag you pay taxes for or what language you speak or what religion you have, if you are friendly and open you will meet friendly and open people. Very nice video buddy!

Dude, this is badass.  I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and I had a completely different view of mainland China.  Thank you for doing what nobody else will.

I have been in China just in May 2024, starting from Guangzhou, to Taizhou, then to Nanin, Dalian, Chaoyang, back to Qingdao, Shanghai and then back home to PNG. But unlike Mike I was mostly traversing this magnificient towns and Cities with trains, and plains and cars, because it was a business trip. But despite that I can  agree about how great and hospitable the Chinese people were. And the cleanliness of the towns and Cities are beyond comparison. No graffities, and no homelessness, everyone from small to great seemed to have something worthwhile  to do to sustain themselves. And more importantly, the food was always great. Thanks for sharing.

I think hitchhiking is crazy but I couldn’t ever think the Chinese police even helped you to accomplish this crazy stuff.  They are so kind.
